oil sending unit on 2001 f150 4.6 L

I was wondering if the 4.6L had a problem with the oil sending unit, mine only seems to work when it decides it wants to, I am going to check it with a manual gauge to make sure but I don't hear any tale tale signs like ticking lifters or knocks, it seems to run fine, i was just wondering if it would be better to just put in a manual gauge instead of putting in a new sending unit but if i do will it effect the computer.

I've replaced a couple of oil pressure switches that behaved in that manner. They're very inexpensive.

The oil pressure gauge on Ford vehicles are just an idiot light with a needle. So if you want actual oil pressure readings, an aftermarket gauge is the way to go.
