I've been running the Troyer set up for about six months or so. I didn't wire it up like the instructions stated and made a bracket to mount the controllers on the driver side of the truck such that water would have a hard time finding it. I also ran two 10 gauge wires for the fan leads from a distribution block.

I didn't like the idea of mounting the controllers on the windshield washer tank. My truck goes off road and that seems too likely a place to get the controllers wet from any mud hole.

In any case, posts like this are making me paranoid. I need to put together a "limp home" kit if something were to happen to the controllers. My kit has a controller for each fan.

Personally I'm gonna follow up with Ford on the 2010 F 150 kit. Better than going thru all this BS. I've had enough of that with the tuning from Fast Lane Mortorsports.

I have not seen many (if any) issues with the fans themselves. All the problems seem to be related to the controllers. I think the Troyer fans are Spal but someone correct me if I am wrong.

I am guessing the 2010 ford fans are big money and only available from Ford. You will still need to run a controller of some kind as factory fans are run by the vehicle PCM.

Has anyone used a Mark 8 electric fan? In the high horsepower Mustang world, they are considered the best.

Good evening folks!

Hi Buckeye!

Yes I believe some members have used these.

Also in that link I posted earlier there is some discussion on same ( https://www.f150online.com/forums/to...ng-e-fans.html) An outfit called Mad Enterprises makes kits (or sell fans & controller separately) using Mk VIII fans.

Hi Grizzstang! I think they are custom-wound 16" Derale Tornados, higher CFM ratings than stock Derale fans. These are robust, no doubt - that is what their website says.

I too would love more details on the 2010 fans; CFM, linear or PWM, turn on/off temps, etc. Concur on the controller requirement.

I've picked them up as low as $50 sometimes, then told around and resold for $100.
Hi FF! I've been looking like a bastige trying to dig up more info on LT1 versus LS1 differences. So far, loks like the LS1 units are larger. I can also find lots more LT1 fans than LS1 fans - very strange ... these things are running ~$150 here ... thanks!

Hi Windsor! Ed Zachary! Whenever I design an install like this I ensure manual override switches, redundant controllers, huge relays, oversized wiring, indicators, etc are included in the mix. Basically, over-engineer everything. Modular construction (using terminal strips) and pre-wired on-board spares allows for quick roadside repairs if it ever becomes necessary.

Cheers & Bests, everyone!

I don't think so. The fans that came in mine look just like Derale's Tornado fans.

So what kind of driving and environmental conditions are these controllers failing in? I'm looking to pick up this kit, but I've never done anything like this before and reading through all 3 pages of this thread is getting me a bit nervous.

I don't do that much extreme stuff with my truck, but if a little rain storm or deep puddle is going to knock out my vehicles cooling system, I'd like to know.

But this is a very informative thread none the less!

Now I'm nervous about the whole thing. I bought Troyer E-fans a few months ago and have had no troubles so far but I just pulled the whole thing out to put it in the new truck I'm getting. Sure don't want trouble with that one. Is the main problem that they won't run or won't stop running when the relays fail?

I was going to mention the Mark VIII fans. I have one which I tested but haven't used. That sucker can blow some major air!

Hello sir. Go evening to you!

Well, it's not too hard to find folks who have had positive experiences as well - this thread is right here in the Aftermarket forum: ==> https://www.f150online.com/forums/ot...stalled-2.html

So - don't know if it is really a systemic problem or a bad run of controllers. And I'm sure there are some that are actually sub-optimal installs as the cause.

I would at this point go ahead and install as-is if they ran fine for you before. BUT - also research a 'PLAN B' in case you do have an issue so you are well-prepared. Things like manual overrides so that at least you can still have engine cooling. More extreme is lining up another brand of controller as a replacement.

As for failure modes:
Most will fail open-circuit which will stop the fan that's on that controller. The failures involving fused relay contacts (arcing), or component failures in the controller electronics (like the adjustment pot) can cause a continuous run condition. And, of course the failures that allow contact with a ground will take out the fuse, stopping the fans.

I hope this helps a bit - I realize that this is an uncomfortable position to be in. It's the truck's coolling system we are discussing, not simply a FartMaster tone/baffle-rattle issue. Day & nite on the 'crucial' scale.

Good luck, sir.

Regards;
