Installing radar/laser detectors

Has anyone ever tried wiring your detector into the wiring harness for the electrochromatic mirrors so you can basically have constant power when the ignition is on and not use a cig. lighter for power? I did this on my 97 Grand Prix, but not sure if the wiring is similar in the F-series trucks. Obviously then just mount the dtector with the suction cups high up on the windshield (speaking of which, is there any product or replacement suction cups that work better than most? I always have problems with the cups releasing in high heat or extreme cold). Just a few ideas I'm running with...

I think that is where most ppl draw power from, at least from what ive read. the only other place would be the overhead console, maybe the interior light?

I have mine installed next to the rearview mirror-ran power from the radio fuse in the fuse box-used an add-a-fuse from autozone(or advance auto)
works perfect

I think best buy carries the brackets or contact the company that made your detector-they should have accessories for it

If you have any of the detectors that use the telephone-like head for power, then you can use this.

What store? I've been trying to find a place that carries suction cups, but to no avail.

I guess what I was asking is can you splice in easily enough to the mirror without running wires under the headliner, down the pillar, behind the radio, all around the cab, out to the antenna, around the axle....well, you get the idea. I have a Cobra detector and a short wire on my old car and am not sure if I can mount it the same. I didn't use a fuse the last time, just wired right in and it worked great. And you don't see any more wiring than the wire and harness for the rearview mirror, other than what plugs right into the detector.

bracket for detector

They make a bracket to mount stuff like this on. It slips between headliner and body inside. You can find it in Police car outfitters. They sell it. Never worry about it falling..

Yea, I knew they carried those, but last time I had checked it was expensive for shipping. But, thanks to you, I checked again, and USPS is free Thanks for the heads-up.

They should fit the my X50 just fine As a random tip, from what I hear, Whistler's "big" suction cups are some of the best there are. Escort's suck since they get "flat" after a while.

As far as a Cobra, I don't really know how to wire, but I'm guessing since they aren't exactly overly complicated in their wiring, you could just stick the red wire in a switched 12V location, and just wire the black one. Maybe the little lights (forgot what they are called.) Just a guess though.
