Smile K&N Generation II FIPK or Airaid....Best one?

Does anyone have any info on either the K&N Performance Kit or the Airaid filter kit for '99 and '00 5.4 liter Tritons? I would like to get one for my 2000 5.4.
I have seen the K&N unit for 1999 5.4's for sale in catalogs, here in the on line store, etc., but when I called K&N, the customer serivce dude indicated that they had NEITHER an OEM replacement filter, or a Performance Kit for 1999 or 2000 5.4's. So, I assume that both the OEM filter and the FIPK's are indeed compatible from the last "official" year (1998) through 1999 and 2000, but have not been "officially" designated so by K&N. Can anyone verify this?

Concerning the Airaid units, do these use a K&N cone filter on the end, of one of their own creation? Does anyone have one of these units installed? The Airaid plenums seem to be finished in a chrome material that looks really sharp.

Any general or specific advice or comments are appreciated. Thanks again everyone!!!

Steve

Do a search in this forum (other aftermarket) for the last 75 days and look for this topic:
K&N GenII for 99 5.4l V8??? You will find a ton of info in it and most of it points to getting the AirAid. I have the K&N and did not have any problems with the install. However, it seems that for the 4.6L the 98 GenII kit works fine, but for the 5.4L the 98 kit does not fit well. Check out the topic I listed above, you should find your answer.

Go with the Airaid if you want a FIPK now. They do work good from what I hear.

Steve, the airaid tube is metal, painted gray, the filter is a K&N filter. It is a good looking unit and the sound it makes is simular to an old 4 barrel at WOT. It is not CARB certified and there is a disclaimer that comes with it that says for off road use only. Also if you instal it you will have to make a gasket to fit between the mounting bracket and MAFS. The K&N FIPK is made with a plastic tube and from all I've read the performance is simular for both units. The big plus for the K&N unit is that it is CARB certified and street legal. To be honest, I couldn't tell any difference in performance after installing the airaid, but it was the last thing I added. Others have raved about the boost in power. Like the other posting said, go back sewveral months, there are pages and pages on these two products.

Steve,
I just bought and installed the K&N performance kit gen II last night (mostly because the local JEGS performance had them in stock). I compared the two very closely, I have pictures that I can e-mail you comparing both. JOHNNY BONDS is right on about every thing he said. Something else interesting I learned from the guys at JEGS is the K&N's plastic tube resist heat keeping the air inside cooler and the Airaid's metal tube conducts heat making the air warmer. Now we all know cool air is better than hot air, right?
Oh yeah, I get to update my signature now!

I finally re-installed my KN Gen II kit with some modifications. I had to chop off about 1" from my resonant dampener box and about 4" of the supplied hose to make it work right without any strange sounds.

As far as performance goes, I can feel a bit more pep, and you can definitely hear the air getting sucked in there! But on the TV show Horsepower they did a short clip on the filters and basically you need to improve the back end to get a true performance increase. That sound right to anybody?

I had to make the same installations mods as Big Silver describes. I felt a nice power increase after I installed my K&N FIPK gII.
