22" tire question

I just got a set of 22" KMC rims but don't know what a good tire size or brand to get. I like the Dunlop 9000 but to small of a side wall for me. Does anybody have the Nitto 285/40/22? How about Pirelli. Also I like my stock truck hight, would i need to lower with the bigger wheels.

99 Red SVT Lightning
Tinted Windows
Alarm w/remote start
clear corners
factory bed cover
moddified air filter box
22" KMC Bofa (need tires)

The Dunlop 285/30-22 will be the closest size to the stock F1's diameter. Stock F1's = 28.45" Dunlop 285/30-22 = 28.73" Not even enough to throw your speedometer off.
The Pirelli 295/30-22 is a bit taller at 28.97". Again not significantly taller, but you mentioned you want more sidewall.
Michelin and Nitto make a 285/35-22 thats 29.85" tall and Pirelli makes a HUGE 305/40-22 thats 31.60" tall.

Anything over 3/4" taller than stock tire height and you deffinitly should have you speedometer recalibrated for the new tire. Also, if you want the truck height close to stock you will have to lower it. Depends on how tall of a tire you go with.

Hope this helps,
Jason

Wow, someone's done there homework! Thanks, that's some great info, more than i though i would get. I think now I will go with either the Dunlop or Pirelli. I will probable lower as well, then that way i can get the "clunk noise" fixed as well. Thanks

One thing to be cautious about is load capacity of the tire. The Lightning is fairly heavy and the last thing you want to do is have a blow out on expensive tires. Using a high performance passenger car tire may not hold up to the weight of the Lightning. Another problem is a 30 series sidewall is pretty small and you could be inviting wheel damage. Just some things to think about. I know 22's and bigger wheels are getting to be the trend, but the 20's are really the best compromise for looks and durability.

Here is a site that you can calculate different tire sizes and compare:

Nascar,

Great choice of rims. Looking to upgrade from my 20's to 22's KMC Bofas...

Where did you get them and what did they run.

Thanks

Howard

Yeah, the 22's are huge. I was originaly looking to get 20"s, but found a guy selling 22''s for $1200. Plus he paid shipping. The rims are in great shape and the guy selling was great to deal with, I was having trouble with paypal, but he was patient with me. I know the 30 side wall is small, and want something safe that wont damage the rim incase of a flat. I know Nitto has a 45 series and its rated for trucks/suv's. Im really leaning towards the Nitto because of it's 45 series, performance, and apperance. Nitto's are short on tread wear though. But for the price I don't plan on doing any burnouts so it should last awhile.

I plan to go with the Nitto 555 in a 285/35/22. I would like to know what Michelin comes in that size. Anyone have any complaints with the Nitto’s? I do not want to run a tire that does not have the correct load rating, or do I want a tire that is taller than 30’.

I've been racking my brian lately trying to figure out what tires I'm going to use, so I thought all my research(lol) might help you out.
I love the look you get with the 22's and the 30 series tire!!!!!
Here's what I'm going with............

20x8.5 with a 275/35-20 in the front
22x10 wiht a 285/30-22 in the back

Ok, so the 30 series doesn't look as bad as i though, what about cornering ability. Not that im going to be doing any road course racing, just that side wall doesn't seem like it would hold up taking tight corners with the weight of our trucks. Someone mentioned about the load capacity. Is the SP9000 a passenger tire? I don't know of any cars that can have 22's. I see alot of you have the SP9000 so i guess the load rating is ok. So I think I have my mind set on either the 285/30-22 SP9000, or 295/30-22 Pirelli Scorpion

Ashenor: Thanks for the pic, they really helped. I too will need to lower once I get them mounted. The Bazo B4's were my second choice!

StruckBy99...is the over 1 inch difference in tire height from front to back going to cause any ABS problems? I know its just a little over 4% difference...but just wondering, not sure what the tolerance is for the ABS systems ring gear differences from front to back...but worth checking out before sinking in some serious cash $$$$ !

I dont think the ABS will be a problem, but I'll research it further. Our ABS System is a 3 channel unit. 2 channels for the front(one for each tire) AND 1 channel for both rear tires. Seeing that the front and rear seem to be separate from each other, I dont forsee any problem. Thanks for pointing that out. I will look in to it.
