most of the time using you wont have a problem with burning oil with a synthetic unless its a higher milage engine, because the oil will slip past the rings easier since its more "slippery", also make sure you break in the engine 1st. smokey yunich told me this

Well also synthetic oil does not "cook" like normal oil does, i think this might be good for the intercooler as well. I'm running Mobil 1 5w30

Aaahhhh, oil is oil, when is the last time you read of an engine failure due to oil quality. Synthetics are okay, but I can say from my own point of view that I've used both and cannot tell the difference. Always keep in mind the manufacturer loves to hype synthetics, and their related profit margins. Just change your oil often and make sure it doesn't run low on you.

On a side note, when I was a younger guy, many many moons ago, I supervised a crew running heavy equipment that operated under heavy loads, high suspended dirt levels as well as high heat. We ran Shell Oil, Rotella-T and never, ever lost an engine due to thermal breakdown or lack of friction protection. We changed the oil out every 100 hours, per manufacturer.

Use synthetics if you want, but our motors just are not spinning fast enough to warrant the extra protection. I'm sure many will say it's foolish to be a dollar short and a pound foolish, but where does that stop?

People who say all oils are the same are full of it. I live in Alaska and work construction and the only oil I have put in the companies equipment is Mobil 1 synthetic oils and greese. Come winter time when it gets nice and cold the oil is still fluid and the equipment starts alot easier. Mechanics around here will tell you the engines last longer on synthetic oils. Seen engines go in for overhauls around the 8000-10000hr mark and still be just fine could of run another 5000hrs before a rebuild. The stuff works and is better than conventional oils.

Heres something from my dad, although this applies to turbocharged diesel engines it may apply to us.

On our highly turbocharged marine engines the turbo outlet temperature is extremely high so when the crankcase blowby (connected to the inlet of the combustion air intake) hits the intercooler core the normal petroleum based oils coke (cooks ) on the thin heat transfer plates and plugs the air side of the intercooler (water is on the other side). The synthetic oils have a much higher cooking temperature and dont plug the intercooler. Check the internet for oil manufactures and see if you can find the distillation curves and "end point"
