Cold weather tune-why??
Cold weather tune-why??
Why do you have to have a cold weather/warm weather tune? I could understand if you wanted max power all year, but for a individual that wants good performance without the worry it sucks. I had my chip reburned for what I thought would be a yearly program or at least thats what I asked for. Well it dropped down to 41 tonight and sure enough it wanted to detonate.
I heard when it gets real cold the computer adds timing?? Can this not be fixed and do I have a option besides flip chips? Thanks Mike

well with all of us running 4-8 lbs pullies and fairlly agressive chips when we get cold dence air we can get some detonation.
In past years with just a chip and filter it wasn't as much as a problem.
Since you live down south it shouldn't be as much of a problem for you. When it is cold just drive easy. However for those of us up north that drive our trucks through the winter you may want to look into a smaller pully and a less agresive program.

Don, can you desribe what detonation is? I have heard this term but don't really know what it is? Is it like valves clattering? I have a older program bought it in 2000 for my 2000 L I usely run it on the less agressive setting in the winter I live in Michigan.

Mike- Im running JDM's J69 program and get detonation at 60 deg. and below.
I got tired of sending the chip back for reburns, so the only other option for these cold months I come up with was using Toluene. A gallon to a half tank of gas stops my detonation. I buy it at the Sherwin Williams in Green Acres shopping center for about $7.00 a gallon. I was worried about using it at first, but this is my second year of usage and no problems. I learned alot about it and Xylene at www.turbobuick.com Click on "message board" and do a search for Toluene and/or Xylene. The Grand National boys have been using it for years. Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, drove by your work the other day and saw your Lightning out front, looks good!!!!

I have never had detonation problems in cold weather, got a 4#r, chip, filter and it still made assloads of power on the dyno. Guess its all in the tune. I am running a PSP chip with the street program (no hot/cold switches for me, only fast(street) and hella fast(race program)

RAN JR- The Toluene is 114 octane I believe and the Xylene is like 117. There is only one place around here that sells race gas, but dont have it all the time. Besides they wont let you put it directly into your tank, you have to bring fuel cans, fill them up, then pour it into your tank.
Its still around the same price as the Toluene. The closest track is 60+ miles away, so we're kinda screwed down here.

Well I'd actually like to stay away from that. I would rather have a tune that would work year round. Obviously it can be done as the factory programming is fine. I guess I'll have to look into a flip chip of some sort.
By the way thanks on the looks!!

............It sounds like a can with marbles in it being shaken rapidly. It could sound like valves clattering too.
Dan
Thank's Dan,
I think we are discribing the same noise. Now I know what to call it. I usually just up the octane and it goes away. I have found that Pensoil makes a octane booster called "Out-Law" it come is a four pack. You add one to a tank of gas it it takes care of all that.
Peace, Suavy

Just because you live in the south doesnt mean detonation wont bite you when its cold...
There have been a couple engines down here that have succumbed to chipped - high speed - cool weather runs
If your truck makes bad noise under accell in cold weather fix it. Either add octane or get the chip reburned or pull the chip ....
RAN JR - I have never seen 114 octane unleaded be careful - Leaded gas will cause a couple problems for your fuel / exhaust system, and contaminate the o2 sensors

this is why you need a cold weather tune
after i pay x amount of $$ to have truck put back together I will be purchasing a flip chip, and getting rid of my single chip program, cold weather caused me to run to lean =3 plugs shot 1 major, and valve or piston damage will know soon ,flatbed came and got my truck today
= flip chip 1 for warm and 1 for cold, mine went to hell temp was 45 degrees out.
toasted plugs and parts
