I know the owner of a dealership here. And he was telling me the SS will be avail. early 2003 its a 6 speed out of a Firebird/ Camaro and has 395 hp Vette heads and big cam. How did they get 395 hp without a blower, When my 02 only has 380, that pisses me off. The price will be around 24000 hell at that price you could buy a blower kit for 3-4000 and kill us. What the hell. Isn't the Lightning supposed to be king? Did I buy this thing to late In the game or what?

Lightning:
380 hp, 450 lb.ft, 4800 lbs.
This means 12.6 lb per hp and 10.6 lb per lb.ft.
Existing Chevy Silverado standard cab:
270 hp, 285 lb.ft, 4142 lbs.
( for the biggest engine in the lightest vehicle)
This means 15.3 lb per hp and 14.5 lb per lb.ft.
And as we all know, they are not competition.
Proposed SS Standard Cab:
395 hp, 409 lb.ft, 4300 lbs(a guess).
This means 10.8 lb per hp and 10.5 lb per lb.ft.
I predict a very close race in the 1/4, the outcome dependent on the shift kit in the Lightning...

SS owner: "Look at me I can keep up with a Lightning!!"
L owner: "Oh wait look at me. I just spent 500 bones and now my truck runs mid 12's
"SS owner: "I have a 6 speed manual!"
L owner: "I have nice leather seats and a non-gutted interior"
SS owner: "I have a bench seat that is incapable of lateral bolstering
"L owner: "My wheels are more original than your copy cat L wheels....SVT stole the design fair and square from that early 90's model van chevy produced!!"
Sorry I am very very very very very very very very bored right now and found this strangely amusing. I know the chevy guys got their mods too. I think it is a sweet truck and would enjoy the semi-competition!! The exhaust pipes on that truck got the L beat hands down.

Your dealer wasn't lying. There is a whole website about these things:
Silverado SS
The 345hp Extended cab is coming in early 2003. The 395 hp regular cab is concept but rumors say summer of 2003. Someone asked how they make 395 hp. Here is an exerpt from the article:
The cylinder heads have been replaced with modified aluminum versions taken from the Chevrolet Corvette's LS6 V8 engine. The heads provide improved airflow while working in tandem with thickened combustion chambers that reduce volume, increasing the compression ratio. Combined with a high lift roller camshaft, 50 horsepower has been added to bring the engine's total output to 395hp and 409lb-ft of torque.
The compression on this motor is 10.5:1 vs. L at 8.5:1. Some say that you will not be able to run a supercharger on the SS with more than like 3-4 LBS of boost because of the high compression. Others say its possible, just look at the vettes. I for one do not know. Just providing information here. The only 1/4 mile time I saw for the Regular cab SS was a 14.08 with an automatic tranny. They are now saying that it will only be offered in the 6 speed manual. We'll see...

I am not a chevy fan. Nor an I bitching about my 02 lightning. I just can't figure out how that can get 390 hp without a supercharger...........And I have one and only have 380 hp stock Can this truck be faster than mine? I thought we bought the king of beast! and by the way its a close ratio gear trans and short thro shift think he said hurst shifter on it. I wouldn't want to shift that all the time. Once in a while wouldn't be bad

Because the chevy has a 6.0Lt Vortec motor compaired to the 5.4Lt Ford. Thats where the horsepower is coming in to play larger motor. And the aluminum versions taken from the LS6 V8 Vette motor. Increased compression ratio.
Dustin
If Ford raised the compression, opened up the exhaust, opened up the intake and did some cylinder and cam work, the 5.4 would easily have another 50-75hp. NA, this would give us between 310-335hp. Add the displacement and you have the HP of the Chevy. However, w/ a blower..cams and heads do not mean as much. Throw the boost to it and we have a +500hp monster.
Oh well, I'm still very happy riding around in my blue 02. I was just curious. I kind of like having the king beast on the block for a change. I don't drive it hard just once in a while because it's there. It's fun to drive, so far it's been a great truck. I'll be putting a bassini exhaust on in the spring. Maybe a Shaker hood also.I'm putting it up for the winter now it's got 6500 miles of the most enjoyable driving I have had in a long time.
Thanks for listening

trading to a 2003, seeing as they won't be making 2004 or 2005 Lightnings. That would give you 3 years, in the latest and greatest, to see what the Dodge and Chevy can do...
