Question factory intercooler

after reading various news on the factory intercooler. It seems like all the factory ones have failed. And Ford has not yet made a permanent fix to this problem. Do you think an aftermarket unit that is more efficient will be ideal?

Ugh, I think your in the wrong place. 99 and 00 had some problems fixed under warranty 01 and up are fine and they work VERY good from what I've read.

It seems like someone could come out with a bigger heat exchanger for behind the bumper. Something that could bring good results and would be an easy install. Maybe a bigger pump which could help.

I know last year Spearco was looking for a test truck in So. California to test an intercooler. I have a garrett intercooler right now and it seems to work fine. I don't know the pressure drop #'s and stuff but there may be a market for one if it isn't too expensive and the #'s are better.

The L is known to have one of the best intercooler setups, bar none...about the only thing that will improve it is to increase the capacity of the system, and for drag racing, have a way to cool the water below ambient temps.

The durability problems have been addressed and fixed.

On a stock L the IC fluid does get cooler than ambient temps.

The only "leaks" I have encountered on my 01, is when I drink to much beer on long trips

This may be showing my ignoarance when it comes to the intercooler but...

What if you put and aux. cooler with an e-fan setup when you add a powercooler. Could that work??

I still talk to them about it.... I periodically let them know that I'm still interested. In fact, talked with them yesterday

Personally (not selling anything), if a new i/c will lower the temps even more than a stock unit, PLUS, in it's efficientcy not leak, then I'd think that it would be well worth some $$. Wheather the 01's are leaking are not isn't fully the argument, it's if the new unit can cool better or not, be it Spearco, or garrett, etc.

And, I know, when it gets 108 out here, and even more hot in other areas, that a better i/c would be great. And just think, with all this talk about the new S/C'ers running cooler wouldn't the combination of a cooler running i/c, a blower that runs cooler plus a the proper tune be awesome?

joe,
i was talking about a separate auxiliary cooler. something like the pic below with an e-fan mounted on it. probably mounted under the truck where it would get some air flow. maybe that is overkill, i dont know. just a thought. like i said before, i dont know much about the intercooler and how it works

Thats looks like a tranny cooler.
I personally don't think you would get any gains for all the trouble in mounting such an item. The factory intercooler is quite well in pulling heat from the system. That being said, if you wanted to add a powercooler that you can add ice to, to further reduce the temp of the liquid in the intercooler, that would be the way to go
