Synthetic ATF

Has anybody used this stuff? I picked up some Mobile 1 ATF because it's supposed to be the best. And I need some for when I do the FTVB.

When I installed the Factory_Tech valve body I used Amsoil ATF. I drained the torque convertor, I want to say something like 13 qts, but I can't remember

How do you drain the torque convertor?
Is it worth it to change it?
How well does the synthetic work?

The torque convertor has a drain plug in it. You might have to bump the motor to find it. I don't think it would be a wise move to mix the fluids. How well does it work, I'll tell you in 50K miles

Did the trnasmission flush machine and went through 15.5 guarts of Royal Purple trnasmission fluid. Only have 1000 miles since the change of fluid. Really I can not tell any difference in my daily driving. MAybe it will make a difference at the track ( have the factory tech valve body).

I had a local quik-lube shop pump the Mercon out and pump the Redline D4 synthetic in about 15,000 miles ago. It took 14-15 quarts($$$$). No 'proof' it's better but my trans is still going strong at 36,100 miles(no more warranty coverage).

I don't see anywhere that this is true. Where did you get your information?

Why would anything be better than synthetic?

I found Factory_Tech say this 03-09-2002:

Some people use them and are okay. The product engineer I know uses Mobil ! and swears it's the best there is, The main reason I don't use it is the cost, I don't think it's that much better, but I'm getting some to try out, I'll let you everyone know what I think.

G

and this 2-10-2002:

I didn't really say not to use synth fluid, I said I don't. As far as Mobil 1, I know an engineer who says it's the best stuff to use, hands down, so it'll work, and some people like it, I don't, but mostly because of the price, not because it won't do a good job. Now what I did say, is don't use MERCON V, the fibers will unravle in it is what I'm told, but I know it's a big no-no.

G

and this 2-04-2002:

I have always been a "Motorcraft Mercon" kinda guy myself, but I heard an engineer who I have a lot of respect for say Mobil 1 is the best there is.

G

and on 12-27-2001

I think I am being mis-quoted, or misunderstood, it's perfectly okay to use synthetic if, and only if, it meets MERCON specs, what I think was misunderstood is that I've said NOT TO USE MERCON V, because it's not compatible with MERCON. I don't know that MERCON V is okay if you have a new build, but I do know that when we started building the 4R70W and 5R55N trannies that use MERCON V a lot of trouble was gone to to make a seperate system to use two differnt fluids when if they were interchangeable I don't think they would have bothered. The manual has in big bold italized underscored letters to not mix them and use only MERCON in a 4R100, if the Mobil ATF is MERCON compatible I don't think it will hurt anything.

Hope this helps,

G

I didn't want to misquote. Thanks for the threads 99 SVT Bolt. So I'm going with my orig thought Mobile 1 is the best, unless somebody wants to give me some qts. I will be posting what I think after a while. I am curious Factory_Tech, did they give you some synthetic ATF in March? If so what have you noticed?

Wow, that's extensive....I forget how much I din't know about fluids....the MERCON V is bad for it, yes, and I think "designer" fluids are a waste of money..other than that, what I said...(see above) Somewhere else I did say once that it's all basically red dye and hydraulic fluid, which is prety close to true, too.

I did get the Mobil 1, it works, even works well, but if I was paying for it, I'd go back to Motorcraft. If you live in the south, the Mobil 1 holds up to heat better.
