Yup. As long as it isn't Mercon V, or a Mercon V compatible, it will work just fine. I used Castrol's Mercon/Dextron fluid at my last tranny filter service. Cost= $1.40 per bottle. Got it at Auto Zone.
Valvoline, Quaker State, Penzoil, Havoline, and Mobil all make fluids that will work and meet Ford's specifications.

You might want to ask Factory_Tech what he recommends. He knows more about this transmission than anyone on this planet.

Walmart uses Quaker State for their Tech 2000 oils and trans fluids. They sell a gallon container for $4.23 last I checked. It is Mercon..the recommended grade.

I currently run Motorcraft Mercon. Some sales rep from an aftermarket company is sending me some synthetic stuff and I'm gonna try it, but mostly because it's free.

Question

Factory_Tech,

There's been some discussion on this board about whether or not synthetics should be used in this transmission or not.

Can we use them, or do they do more harm than good to this box?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Some people use them and are okay. The product engineer I know uses Mobil ! and swears it's the best there is, The main reason I don't use it is the cost, I don't think it's that much better, but I'm getting some to try out, I'll let you everyone know what I think.
