In case anyone is interested, I just found out that FedEx is slated to OWN the USPS by Q4 2004. Apparently, FedEx has recently enetered into a contract for the shipment of all of the Express Mail and Priority Mail between post offices. Previously, this mail was sent to airports and put on any plane that had room. Now FedEx is the exclusive provider.
I live in Memphis, Federal Express HQ is here as well as thier largest hub (everything goes through Memphis) and I know a bunch of Fed-X people and have never heard that.

Yes Fed-X and the USPS went into an agreement, Fed-X moves the Express and Priority Mail as you stated, but the USPS also delivers Fed-X stuff out to the very rural areas that would make a driver burn away two hours to go and drop off. U.S. Postal Mail goes everywhere!

Also, there has often been rumors of Fed Express and United Parcel Service merging. The new company will be called: Fed-Up

I know people in both UPS and as stated before Fed-X. Until last year Fed-X had UPS beatin hands down. This past year living in Memphis UPS does a much better job. <shurg> maybe it's becuase we ARE in Fed-X HQ territory too.

Either way, you stuff gets abused, lost, and both do good and bad... it's all a reflection on what your delivery person does in what drives how you look at the company as a whole.

I too prefer Fed Ex to UPS. I have had pretty good customer service from both, and they always arrive on time, but man the boxes look terrible from the UPS truck. What do they do with the packages? If I have anything fragile to ship, it will certainly be via Fed Ex !

Bwahhahah, that is true. We are rough on them. Its not your driver, its the people in the wharehouse. To be fair he package is suppose to be able to handle a 4 ft fall. On a beat up pkg, 99 out of a 100 times the merchandise is fine.

On the signature thing, all you have to do is call the 1800# and they will send you driver back to you house, belive me i have to go back all the time.

When I bought my Dell I upgraded to Fed Ex since it HAD to be signed for... The closest UPS office is downtown... 20 miles away you call ansd they say its here... Then you show up and they say...oops its still on the truck.. come back tomorrow... I say go get it off the truck... They say we'll deliver it 3 more times before they return it. I say you can deliver it 20 more times, I will NEVER be there..... How about finding it NOW ???

Ok have I convinced you UPS sucks ??

As far as the Money thread I happily reward poeple for exceptional cust service...

can I drive. On a side note my UPS packages have always been beat up. Just ask my Long tube headers. Ding. The only way they got that ding is cause someone wasn't careful. Now UPS wants to pick up the package and look at it. I said that wasn't possible as I tore the box it came in open. They are going to contact me and have one of there representitives come out and look at it. OH it also was taped pretty good like something was falling out. Packages I recieve from Fedex have been in great condition.

dude i friggin hate UPS... they make you jump thru hoops to ship high value... then they wont't cover your claim... i had the same thing happen to me with a compter and they denied the claim... don't expect your money for damage.

sorry to hear that Don, but I bet your package will arive un-broken

Dont get me wrong, im not taking up for their mistakes. I just happen to work for them and know the ins and outs. If you have a claim and it is denied you need to be persistant and they will pay. Its all part of their game, if you know what i mean. And yes Drivers make alot of money. 5 years ago the average income for a package car driver was $52,000. We just got a new contract with hella raises over 6 years. Its a hard job, but teh pay is good. A good tip for ya is if your package has alot of tape on it then refuse it . Tell your driver to quit delivering you that crap. I tell my customers if i think something is damaged so they can refuse it. Its easier that way. Then you dont have to make a claim and you can refuse it, then call teh shipper and explain adn have another sent out.

Well I'm an UPS's driver too.
It's always the same story. The customers try to skrew UPS and then they think UPS is trying to skrew them. I have people that out right steal boxes and claim they never got them and then want UPS to pay for it. Then UPS management does a back track and trys to find any little thing that looks out of the ordinary with the situation/delivery and if so.... then guess what???? It come out of the drivers pay check!!!! But then when the driver wont leave the box where they want it they call and complain. You wonder why its hard to file a claim with UPS?? Its because all of the bogus claims that are filed every day. I could tell so many stories that it isnt even funny. And if you are shipping something, use extra tape and alot of packing or filling in the box. That is a HUGE problem!!
As far as servise goes UPS is currently #1 in service overall. Thats the latest report that we were given. I think its around 97% effective/on time on all deliveries. Bottom line, no one offers the thing UPS does and no one handles more boxes. UPS is the largest shipping Co. in the world. Does UPS skrew up??? All the time. If you have ever been inside a wharehouse you would wonder why more things dont go wrong. I have yet to see any company of any kind run perfect every single day. The reason you may hate UPS or Fed-X or USPS is because their buisness is to provide service and that only. They dont offer a product. Everyone has to deal with one of them if they want something delivered. If your delivery guy is a jerk, tell them that. Ask them why are you being a jerk? If they are nice tell them that too. If you get to know your driver it helps alot. They can come back and re attempt or even learn your schedule so that you are at home or whatever else. Sometimes they can, sometimes they cant. And FYI, I know UPS is not scared to fire a bad driver because I see it happen. Usually the bad ones dont last or get canned.

Hug your UPS driver tomorrow

I have had MUCH better sucess with Fed Ex ... If you have a fed ex package requiring signature they leave a hang tag that describes where and when it can be picked up later the same night. Show them the tag they disappear and 2 minutes later they hand you the package. If it is big they help you carry it to the car. Since I will NEVER be home to sign it works great.
UPS has the exact same Delivery Notice service.

If UPS has a signature required package you may as well just cancel the order... You will NEVER be able to pick it up. If you arent a business customer paying the daily pickup charge you dont exist to them... I have happily paid as much as $20 extra for Fed Ex shipping.

Doug
AHHHHH, I think you might be exaggerating a bit here. If this were true UPS would be out of buisness. If it happend to you once, that sucks. If it happend twice, I would also use FeD-X in your area. I would first call UPS cooperate and tell them how I feel.

I love you Doug

Talking How to ENSURE your package is respected...

My buddy worked nights at the big Louisville UPS hub to pay his college bills, and tells me that many boxes are sorted and handled quite roughly and with great haste. Conveyors go this way and that, and people really give the boxes a hard time.

Occasionally, however, large tubes would come through the work areas from farms, marked "BULL SEMEN." These were handled with the utmost care and respect.

Now you know what labels to put on your packages, eh?

Here are my 5 UPS botch job stories.

1) In 1990, the UPS driver broke my Macintosh computer. He literally threw it out of the truck onto the street. It then rolled a few times. I know he did this because I was walking up to my frat house just as he did this. I sent the computer to myself from Texas in it's original boxing. You would not believe how much trouble I had getting them to deal with me because they were convinced that I was not the shipper.

2) In 1992, I pre-ordered a Harmon Kardon Dolby S tape deck. I never recieved it; but was charged on my AMEX. UPS driver said he left in my parents' back patio by the door. I called BS. We had a locked gate and 2 very territorial 85lb. Weimaraners
in back. So they sent out an investigator. This doof then came into my home and said he knew that I the package and that it was federal offense to lie about it. I threw him out of the house. One of 2 things happened, the driver kept my stuff or he left it out front. If he left it out front, it was probably stolen by the construction workers building houses on either side of my parents'.

3) In 1998, Bell Helmets was sending my a replacement helmet since I busted my old one. Two weeks later I moved. I called UPS and told them my new address. Two weeks after that they found it and delivered it to my old address. I called to complain; but their only response was that they were only obligated to deliver to the address on the box. However, they would happily pick up the box and deliver it to my new address - for a price.

4) In 1998, 2 of the 4 Centerline wheels that were delivered to Discount Tires were bent. They were sent back. UPS delivered 1 correctly and the other to a completely different city. They driver released it; and it was never seen again.

5) In 2000,

Oh forget it! UPS sux a$$.

since you work for ups, i have a question. I ordered something from a catalog company, which I cancelled immediately a few hours later.

Since i cancelled, i wasnt expecting delivery obviously, untill i got my credit card bill. UPS supposedly delivered the product, which i never received. My CC company credited my account. So who takes the lost? UPS, Credit crd Compny, or hopefully not me?

Thanks for your reply.
