Break In - Drive it home or not?

The truck should be ready for pick up this friday. The shop is about 200 miles away from my house. Should I drive it home? I have been told many different things from "rent a flat bed and trailor it home" to "floor it as much as possible." What do you all suggest. I was told that if drive it home to vary the RPMs. 10 min at 1500, 10min at 2000, etc...then once i get to 3000, start over. Does that sound right? Just tell me what you guys suggest...

Thanks

Joe,

I would drive it around where you are picking it up for a little bit (maybe 30 minutes) and then get that thing on the road for the trip home... Just take it easy and do as someone else suggested to you about varying he RPM's..

it's about time.....and don't let your "friends" drive it this time... ....JR

excellent suggestion above. Hell, drive it around for an hour around the shop. Then, on the highway home vary the rpm's on the way home, run 50, then 60 back to 55, then up to 65mph .
Good luck with your truck..........BUT..........just remember, if it starts to knock, park it next time

Joe, the RPM varying thing doesn't apply to your motor. That's the procedure used to break in a non-roller camshaft. Driving your truck 200 miles home will be a great start on breaking in the piston rings.

Check for coolant or oil leaks after driving around town. Stop in well lit area and look for anything you might need to take it back for. Better to find something before you get back home.

Lightningrod has a good point. Driving for a couple of hours around the repair shop area might be a smart idea. Lots of hoses and coolant lines that could not be snugged down all the way.

Where did you have your engine built?

Any specs?
