Torque Converters on the 4R100
Okay, I searched and found a bunch of threads on aftermarket torque converters, but wanted to get a comprehensive thread going. Hopefully factory tech and some of the other tuners will chime in here...
1) What is the stock stall speed of the stock converter?
2) How much higher over stock would you want to go over stock to still be an every day driver including stop and go traffic?
3) The TQ locks up around 40mph or so, according to PI's website. Not the same as stall... Will an aftermarket torque converter with the same stall speed as stock lock at the same speed? Is the lockup a function of stall? I.e. higher stall means higher speed before lockup?
4) There are 2 alternatives (at least) to the stock converter. PI states that the stock converter has a torque multiplier of 2.53:1 vs stock of 1.93:1. Does anyone know what art carr's rating is? I assume the multiplier and moving the launch higher into the rpm band for more horses/torque are the main performance benefits of an aftermarket unit.
5) Is there a tranny cooler on the stock truck? If so, can it be improved, or should one go aftermarket? How hight would you push the stall on a daily driver before messing with additional cooling for the tranny?

I will fill in what I know (which isn't much). The lock-up is controlled by the computer. It can be adjusted up or down. It has no bearing on the stall. If you add a stall converter it will generate more heat. Heat is a killer of automatics. L's do come from the factory with and external cooler. I personally would not run a stall converter without additional cooling. Better be safe than sorry. $150 cooler or $2000 for trans rebuild?
Witha 2400 stall and an aluminum pan, my tranny temp is always at least 20-50 F lower than water temp. Takes a long time to get above 120, the highest I have seen is 160F. No temp increase at the drag strip!
Local shop re-worked stock converter for 2400 rpm stall for only a few hundred dollars, installed price less than cost of PI Convertor and reduced 60' and ET by 0.15 sec.

Well, to give some feedback on what I found out on the Art Carr torque converter. My tranny temps are way too hot so I installed an additional transmission cooler with a fan. Tranny temps stayed approx. the same. Jim@JDM datalogged my truck and the Art Carr torque converter stalls at 3800 not the 2400 I purchased.
I think that when the stock converter goes back in this week it will all be better. Yes, I'm pretty mad that I have to R&R the tranny again.
In short don't purchase an Art Carr converter. I bought mine form mark@lightningforceperformance.com
