Need advice on good radar detector (besides valentine 1, I'm on a strict budget)

Can any one recomend a good radar detector? I know V1 is the best, but I can't afford it right now. Please recomend something good at a reasonable price that is not a piece of sh$t. Is the cobra model that Costco carries any good? Please help

Escort Passport 8500 here too...........I'd argue that the Valentine 1 "is the best"--yes, it has more 'bells and whistles' but the 8500 is as good or better in radar/laser alerts. Get it from the mfg'r.

Of course, a quality CB radio is even better than either detecter for all kinds of 'protection'. I have a RCI 2950dx mounted on the floor hump.

Thumbs up

I give my brother a six pack once a week and he rides around with me cause he's been out of work for six years.
He uses a telescope. I ain't sure where he got it but, I think it's a toy one.

As a radar detector he is fairly accurate as long as there ain't a skirt walking down the street.

(can't get much cheaper than a half dozen PBRs)

Escort Passport 8500 same here

I used to have Cobras and K-40. Don't hold a candle to the Passport. Nothing like getting it straight from teh source, one side of the shop makes the guns for the cops, the other side makes the detectors for us "criminals". <g>

I got mine direct with a repeat customer sale when it came out. Had a 4500 before.

Did you realize that a new Valentine 1 is out that has almost twice the performance of the 8500 in many cases? Look the same but is smaller. Most don't realize the Val1 is in a constant state of change even though it isn't advertised.

IF YOUR STATE POLICE AND CITY POLICE TEND TO EXPLOIT DRIVERS WALLETS PRIMARILY WITH LASER, AS IN MY AREA, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE K-40 LASER DIFFUSER.

I HAVE NOT USED THE K-40 RADAR DETECTOR.

Something to think about- the Valentine has arrows which tell you where the signal is coming from. I think that is the most valuable part of the detector because it gives you more ability to determine the source of the signal. Every detector I've owned will give false signals, but once you get familiar w/ the Valentine, it gives you a lot of confidence in your "stealthing" abilities. It may be more, but you will not regret it.

I don't want info from outside of a mile from a radar detector. Less stress involved looking for the source. The V1 tells you where the signal is coming from. That is the useful difference.

A CB radio is the way to go if you want the best police detector. Of course, that depends on how diligent the other CB users are about giving Bear reports that day.

Valentine 1

Only the best....think about it...one ticket will likely cost more than the radar detector itself when you factor in long term insurance increases ect..
If you can't afford a new one, there are about a dozen V1's on Ebay right now, save $100. or more and buy one of them...just make sure you can return it if it doesn't work for one reason or another.

Post while you make up your mind...

...Grasshopper, I suggest reevaluating your driving habits. Not a knock on your skill or proficiency as a driver, but on your conspicuity... (is that even a real word )

1: You're driving a high visibility vehicle, that is impossible to hide. Know this. Use a blocker.

2: Don't tailgate, if the guy in front is intent on a contest of wills, you need someplace to go.

Even if you use a blocker, make sure you're not the fastest...
Know potential hiding / high enforcement areas & behave accordingly there.

Keep the truck clean, no bumper stickers or little pictures of the kid pi$$ing on ANY thing else - you don't want to predispose a cop to not liking your views.

You see the red & blues, don't drive down the road thinking they're not for you, pull immediately over at 1st sight, hands on wheel, interior light on at night.

DO NOT have your license etc.. ready. Wait for the cop to ask for them. Leave your seatbelt on until you get your license. When asked, respond with something like "...sure, they're in my wallet, right rear pocket, I'll get them now."

This is a perfect opportunity to to elaborate to the cop on what a clean driving record you have, and how a citation would certainly ruin that. Wouldn't it be great if this could be a warning ???

The NMA, at www.motorists.org has volumes of helpful info on helping yourself avoid the voluntary motorist tax...

Now back to detectors. I've got a V1 now & have had other brands. The V1 stomps the competition. That said, with money being a problem, consider this.

Pick up a less expensive radar detector, and save your pennies for a V1 OR look for a used one - they are software upgradeable from the factory... check ebay, you could find a deal. Save your pennies & get the V1.

Until you figure out where the false alarms occur, when the detector goes off, check speed & following distance every time it goes off & react accordingly. DON'T jab the brakes, coast down to speed (limit) & obviously, be driving close enough to the limit that you can... IF you jab the brakes from a radar hit, guaranteed 8 in 10 chance of getting a ticket (no warning). They can tell when a radar detector induces a stop, and most cops don't like them. Once you figure out where the false alarms are, remember, cops know this too, & sometimes sit there...

Keep an eye out several seconds ahead & behind you. If you spot what is likely a cop vehicle, lane change right if possible & assume a different & slower speed.

HTH

Save a few $$ / month.

I've owned the "top 3" and i'm not kidding when i say the V1 is light years ahead of the others. My Bel980 (other car) just sucks, and it was rated 2nd over all. V1 has a radar for front and rear. Imagine having any other radar except the V1 and your on the highway, it starts beeping, where's the cop? Who knows, your radar won't tell you. Plus they're all cheap plastic except for the V1. My other radar melted inside and eventually quit (Arizona heat). I have a friend that still uses his 10 year old (or so) V1, unbelievable...
