Quality is Job ONE? or Job NONE?
Hey Robert Francis
Thats a bunch of crap. "Often not noticeable, unless you look for it" Sounds like Fords way of saying "If you dont notice it, we aren't saying ***** to you about it!!!!"
If I didnt notice my dash lights were out because I never drove at night, would that problem be there "unless I looked for it"?
If I never took my truck out in the rain, would my leaky back window not be there?
I would of had to been blind not to see all the crap that went wrong on my '99 Lightning.......including the bed being out of alignment! The bed alignment coincidently got fixed when they pulled the bed off to fix the fuel pumps (with just 100 miles on the odo.)
The bed alignment (and other problems) are a HUGE problem when FORD just cranks out vehicles with disregard for the owners satisfaction. This process seems to happen alot these days at FORD. I see it everyday at work. I do my part to make sure what goes on the vehicle is as good as it can be, but there are higher powers!!!!
When I bought my '02 Lightning, I purchased an '02 Focus for my wife. That damn car has been in the shop 3 times for the same leaky trunk and its only 4 months old. As you can see this thread came just in time for me to vent my frustrations about Fords non-exsistant QUALITY

In 92 I purchased a new F150. This truck has never had to go back to the dealer for any work. Just brakes and routine maint. necessary. It now has about 130000 miles on it and it still operates just fine.
In 92 I purchased a used 91 Mustang LX hatch with 20000. I have only had to replace the brakes and tune up engine on this car.
In 00 I bought a Mustang GT. Had numerous drivetrain problems with this vehicle. After it was at the dealer for repair 44 total days I filed under the lemon law in Florida. Ford settled with me and bought the car back without going to a hearing.
In 01 I purchased an Expedition with a 4.6. For the most part this vehicle has been OK. It does have a bad engine knock at startup, paint bulbling (sp) on the hood and the rubber molding on the L rear door came off. As soon as my wife gets back from a trip I will take it to the dealer.
In 02 I purchased my L. I love this truck but it does have in my opinion some serious problems. Engine knock at idle. Sounds almost like a diseal (sp). Clunk in the front end. Body alignment proplems. Molding on passenger door bottom falling off. Drivers seat spring pushing up through cloth. Super Charger making a grinding noise at idle. Truck has 6200 miles.
I'm a die hard Ford man, but something is wrong. Seems the newer Fords are without a doubt suffering from quality control problems. Now, if we who own these vehicles, are willing to ignore these problems and not make Ford fix them then we deserve what we get. I think we owe it to ourselves and others to do all we can to make Ford correct these problems. It seems this engine knocking noise (marble in a can) has been around for at least two or three years. The seat problem has been around for a couple of years. What really gets to me is Ford just keep on selling these known defective parts. This tells me Ford demonstrates lttle regard when it comes to quality control.
I certainly hope Ford gets it act together and once again produces the troble free vehicles it is capable of doing.

Almost 30,000 miles on our '01. I don't have any b!tches. I'm very happy.
p.s. We had to go 80+ miles through the desert on the 4th. in the L. We were worried about being late for an appt. We made it safely in 50 minutes.

The only problems on my 01
1) Stock air-box slightly restricted airflow.....fixed that myself
2) Boost not up to par.....fixed that myself
3) Computer malfunction, cutting out between shifts.....fixed that myself
So you see, small problems with the truck, are easily fixed yourself at home without the dealer getting involved

I make no excuses for Fords quality problems. I worked for Ford for 32 years in Vehicle Operations, so I have some familiarity with quality issues. So I am always concerned about Ford quality issues. None of the items you mentioned should have happend to your vehicles. No excuse for these things to happen on a continuing basis.
I just noted that for those who might not be aware of it, that Ford does know they have a bed alignment problem. And was workihg on improving it. Obviously if your lites aren't working, anyone would notice this at the time of occurrence. SVT owners tend to be more discriminating on some items that others are not quite so concerned with. The average F-250 owner, that buys the vehicle for a work truck vehicle, fills it up with tools and equip. every day, mite not notice a bed alignment condition as quickly as some others, because his/her main priority may be "functionality" of the product. But note; I don't offer this as an excuse. Theres no valid excuse for poor quality! Three times for a dealer fix - is at least two times too many! And when you pay 32k+ for any vehicle, you shouldn't have basic mis-alignment problems. I surely hope your Focus trunk leak is fixed.
And I'm really glad you do the best you can to make sure you do a quality job. Ford needs more people such as yourself! And keep doing those things. It may not always seem so, but I can tell you - it makes a difference! And I understand the frustrations with "higher powers" - part very well. I dealt with it every day.

I couldn't agree more ... We used to produce and
manufacture better stuff years ago.... I can remember
polishing the inside of housings that NOBODY would ever SEE!!!
That was Quality .... Not the excuses we get today....
PS.... I know the FORD guys read here, so maybe we
CAN get some answers ...
Like WHAT the hell does it take to cut a STRAIGHT hole
in the fender?????? LOL
First and foremost - these trucks are produced by the thousands. Perfection on every vehicle CANNOT be expected. Yes, Ford could do better, but I'm not willing to pay another $10K for that "better". Ford, like its founder, mass produces vehicles for the masses. If you demand perfection, buy a handmade European car - and pay $$$$$ for it!
Bed Alignment: Go buy a tool for the bed bolts and fix it yourself (my 02 L is off sightly, my wife's Supercrew is dead on). Simply loosen the six bed bolts and shove the bed around until it is where you want it.
Painted steering box: Get real! This is a truck! It was not intended to be a show car. The rust on the steering box, and similar components, does not now nor ever will hurt the function of that component.
Yes, Ford could do a little better with quality without effecting the price of their product. But, we have all purchased products that have had flaws of one form or another. That's life. I happen to like my Lightning. It has some flaws. More than some, less than others. I will learn to live will some, have some corrected under warranty, pay to have others corrected, and fix those that I can myself. I still like my truck! MADE IN U.S.A. - even if it's not quite perfect!

It's sad how we don't do a better job today than we did yesterday. I certianly do. Just wish my employer would take some pride in what they produce. Not the lip service crap they constantly dish out. They have a chart to show you anything you "want to" see. But never the less when I give a little TLC to the L, I keep finding new/loose things. And the trash in the paint?!!!??!! What's up with that?
Good thing is we live in a free market society. But until people stop buying these and go else where, it'll continue just as is. Where else you gonna spend $30k for a new 380hp pickup?
Anybody remember the late 70s/early 80? :-(
Maybe we need ANOTHER kick in the rear?
WOT

ha--funny Thats whats going to happen.
Ford seems to focus on one issue at a time. When quality was Fords big issue way back when--they focused mainly on quality and let other issues fall to the way side. Then when quality seemed to be headed in the right direction, Ford started concentrating on other aspects of vehicle production. Now Ford is starting to have problems with quality again, its going to be a repeat of the late 70's/early 80's like wydopnthrtl said.
Like I said in my post earlier in this thread. I make parts for Ford. I do my best to make sure GOOD parts go out the door. Not everyone I work with feels the same as I do and there are higher powers that make "decisions based on whats best for production"

PT's02L - They mass produced Ford trucks in the 90's also and seemed to do a better job with Quality back then. I don't think anyone expects absolute perfection but it just seems to me that Ford has let quality control slip drastically. IMHO, Ford's moto of "Quality is Job One" today is nothing more than lip service to sell units. Over the years I have owned many Ford trucks and cars. I have never, and I mean never, had so many problems as I am having with the newer Fords. I too have always and will continue to own American made automobiles but I just hope Ford will improve on it's Quality before they loose more market share.

I couldn't agree more on this one. I have never known of or owned a vehicle that had a painted steering box. I doubt that I ever will. LOL

It's people like you that keeps me comming back to buy a new Ford. I will not give up yet but I tell you the truth, It is getting old. I plan on ordering a new 03 lightning and will keep my 02. I will probably give the 02 to my son.
