Question Oil weight again ......

After having enought of the marble in a can noise i went from 5w-20w dino to
10w-30w syn. The marble noise has been decreased BIG TIME. But now because of the thicker oil i'm getting about 4 or 5 seconds of top end (over head cam noise) on start up. So ...... will i have any long term problems using
the thicker oil ? i can't handle that marble noise. Any comments would be appreciated

Fritz,

I also went from 5W-20 dino to 10W-30 synthetic, but have not experienced the marble in the can noise yet. The synthetic really shut my engine up (just overall mechanical noise). You can barely hear it idling under the hood, and it seems to have made a huge difference all around. My truck sits for days at a time without starting and I was getting some very slight dry rattle at start ups (maybe a second or two, but not like most have described here) and that was the main reason I went to the synthetic. How long have you had the synthetic in, and how often do you start your truck? Maybe it will take a while to get everything coated in the engine. Just my thoughts!

I made my first oil change at 3000 miles and got NO marble noise. I used 5W 30 Mobil 1 petrolium based oil. Hope this helps.

I used 5w30 dino oil until 9k miles, then went to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic. No noises.

I don't think running 10w30 synthetic would hurt anything - I'm planning on running it when the truck gets higher mileage.

Dry rattle at start up ........ thats a good way to discribe it. The marble in the can sound really is not an issue anymore with the 10w-30w. It's the "dry rattle at start up" that concerns me. This is the first over head cam engine i have owened,is it normal ?

I had the dry rattle occasionally(really only a couple of times that I can remember and only for maybe a second or 2) on my 2000 4X4 with a 5.4 engine, and I drove that thing HARD!!! Pulled pretty much anything I wanted how I wanted with NO PROBLEMS until it was totalled (NOT BY ME) at almost 40K miles. I pulled several things with it all the time as it was the only truck in the neighborhood that could handle heavy loads(helped a lot of neighbors that only had cars or very light weight trucks). Plus, I used it for my own heavy load occasions. It was chipped from 1000 miles. I think all motors from stock to hot rod occasionally will rattle. I have heard more than one do it on occasion. I think as long as it doesn't do it all the time, it is just a dry pocket with no oil somewhere in the motor. I have had other vehicles with all different kinds of motors experience some sort of start up noise. Even my wife's Honda V6 will occasionally rattle on start up. And it has done it from day 1. Just my .02.

Also,

I am definitely not a mechanic, nor do I really want to be, but I feel that I am very aware of different noises within vehicles and I like to research and find what it is, or if it is a big deal. I would talk to your dealership or a trusted mechanic if it concerns you. I was always told it was hydraulic lifter noise, but some people have told me that they shouldn't make noise.

If the hydraulic lash adjusters/lifters do not get proper lubrication they will make noise on cold startup. This is straight out of the ford factory service manual.
