Question Ticking sound at idle--is this normal?

I hear a ticking sound on both sides of the engine by the fuel rails. Anyone else have this? Paranoid about launching a sparkplug.

Have you checked to see if the plugs are tight?

can you hear it in the car with the hood and doors closed and windows up? if so then dont drive it and have it towed to the dealer. if its not that loud then i dont think you should worry.

Mine ticked since I drove it off the lot that was tied to engine speed.

It turned out to be a small blob of whatever adhesive they use to bind the laminations of the blower belt together hitting the idler pullies.

I have the same noise, but it only comes from the ride side (passenger sd.) of the engine. Def. sound slikes it's coming from the injectors.

They are kinda like mini-lifters. The actaul term is "valve lash adjuster" on a OHC engine . . . and some are known to make noise, especially at cold startup.

valve lash adjuster

I would think a valve lash adjuster would be more like a rocker arm as opposed to a lifter (lifter = lifts push rod- pushes rocker arm -opens valve) valve lash adjuster pushes down to open and close valves with each pass of the lobe on the cam am I correct with this staement I am also new to non push rod motors also

Mine does it too, only from passenger side of motor.

I did some inspecting one day with a long prybar (used as a sort of stethascope)

Thought it was coming from and injector, so one-by-one I unplugged each injector, noise still there.

Thought I may have a loose plug, changed them, noise still there.

Figured it was just something noisy under the cam covers... not going to worry about it

If whatever it is breaks, I'll just take it to the dealer

The Valve or Hydraulic lash adjuster is a lifter type. It's made up of a cylinder, a piston, a ball check valve and a spring.

Restricted oil flow makes them noisy during start up.

Here are a couple of definitions from various sites (not specifically 5.4L, just OHC):

Hydraulic valve lifters (lash adjusters) are used on some engines to avoid the necessity of a clearance otherwise needed in the valve gear to allow for expansion resulting from temperature changes. Hydraulic valve lifters also eliminate the need for manual adjustment to take care of the wear at various points of the valve gear. They may be installed on the rocker arms, valve bridge, or cam follower. (http://www.tpub.com/engine3/en3-38.htm)

The hydraulic lash adjuster is located between the camshaft and valve stem. The top surface of the hydraulic-lash adjuster is always in contact with the cam face. The cam directly pushes the lash adjuster to open or close the valve. The engine oil flows through the cylinder head and into the lash adjuster so as to always maintain zero valve clearance. (http://www.geocities.com/plmjohnson/...cification.htm)

Do a generic search on a search engine for "Hydraulic lash adjuster" and you'll find a ton of info, like the above links.
