Break In?????

Hey All:

Just got my '02 last week. I have resolved to keep it out of boost for 1000 miles, though this has proven more difficult than I originally thought.
There are no specific recommendations for break-in in the owner's manual.

Is 1000 miles enough?

Thanks

Steve

me too

I'm going through the same thing, Steve. It's tough cause these trucks make boost so easily. I currently have about 850 miles on it, and I haven't totally punched it yet. I have made around 5# of boost a couple times. I'm trying to wait until 1000 miles as well.

P.S. I made the first oil change last weekend at 650 miles, and it was the easiest oil change I've ever made....took about 25 minutes.

I changed oil at 1000 and then started venturing into boost gradually. You will notice a marked increase (15%) of power after 3000. My first WOT was around 2000...

Just drive it like you would normally. don't be afraid to get on it a little. The most important thing is to varry the speed and RPM's

Got my '02 late December, vowed to stay out of WOT for at least 1500. Subtract the last 0 and there you have it, 150 miles, no WOT, .

Since then, just drive it, WOT or whatever, cuz if it is going to break, it will be under warranty and stock.

All of my previous vehicles were driven from show room to trade in by the method Don describes, just drive it and enjoy.

I added 1/4 throttle every 100 miles. A blizzard helped. Now at 600 miles I'm driving it normally - a few WOTs every once in a while.

My philosophy is that if you baby it, you're truck will grow up to be a baby. But if you run it hard from the beginning (without beating on it) you're truck will run stronger in the long run.

I picked my 2001 L up Dec 20 in Dover, DE with 121 miles on it. By the time I got home I saw 6-8 # several times. I now have just over 1700 miles and I have made several WOT events. No problems yet... No Mods Yet either. I noticed around 1400-1500 miles the motor was definately making more power. I think i will change Oil and Filter at 2000 and rotate tires, Put a chip, filter, pulley and Headers , OK I was dreamin for a second or two...

Talking Dealer Said !!!!

The dealer told me when I picke dup mine (Feb 4-02) to drive it like I would normally drive, So I am beating on it when it needs to be beat on. I find it nearly impossible to not nail it when getting on highways or from a light. I am even worse now that the exhaust is on, but truck is rinning and sounding great @900 miles
already changed to synthetic @ 800 miles

Just my opinion
Slick

Ummmmm .... Sounds a bit early for Syn ... Prolly
end up not breaking your rings and things in enough.
The Valvoline guy told me to wait until the normal
oil does all the breaking in on the engine parts,
(5,000-10,000 miles) then switch to the 5W 30 Synthetic.

I NEVER beat my baby .... (Yeah, right ...)

I have built a lot of motors, and basically take the Pro-stock racers opinion... break it in like you're gonna drive it. If they can take a brand new motor and make 200+mph passes on it, I don't see how normal daily driving on a regular engine is any worse.

So, I smoked the tires at 300 miles, and now at 1000 have the 2# pulley, air filter, and flip-chip in it, melting tires. Its time for a good natural oil change, then Amsoil at 3K and every 3K thereafter. Should last longer than the blower...

I have also made several 140mph passes with my freshly rebuilt 408 Windsor in the 94 GT, with 10 pounds of intercooled boost. Solid as a rock, yet the motor has maybe 100 miles on it total.

Hell, drive it like you stole it! That's what I did from day one and mine is fine.
