DYNO DAY in DIXIE

Drove 140 miles to South Georgia Corvettes in Thomasville, Ga(about 35 miles notrh of Tallahassee, Florida) for my second dyno. The first was back in July. Aaron Scott is the owner/operator. He had 12 Corvettes there, each needing his touch. One of them was a Lingenfelter vette that was in an issue of C&D. It won the 0 to 150 mph to 0 test in 23.xxx seconds.

At that time, I had a JL 2 lb pulley, JL Ram Air, JDM 'warm weather' chip, LFP th/body, and an oil breather cap filter. My l had 6,500 miles on it with the stock exhaust and plugs. On this same dyno with 90*F temps, it pulled 388.7 max. RWHP and 467.9 max. rwtq. Not too shabby..............

Today, my mods are: PSP Fresh Air, PSP flip chip, JL chip, JL 5 lb pulley, BABolt th/body, BR7EFs(.040), 160*F 'stat, disabled PCV valve, breather cap filter, and a JDM/Magnaflow single muffler cat/back. I also poured in 16 ozs. of Torco Accelerator into about 12 gals of Texaco 93 oct.

I ran PSP's chip(street side) first after about a 20 minute cool-down and a battery disconnect. O/D off, 54*F, in 'DRive', slowly up to 3,100 rpm and then 'mat' it up to 5,800 rpm. Max rwhp was 396.3 and max. rwtq was 488.5(all SAE corrected) with the A/F ratio starting at 14.3(3,500 rpm) and dropping to 11.0 at 5,200 rpm. From 4,500 rpm, it was at 11.2 and stayed there up to 5,100 pm. Aaron thought it was "way too rich"? He was standing beside the passenger door as I ran the truck and he said "gobs of fuel smoke was coming out of the tips."

I then replaced the PSP chip with JL's. We waited about 12 minutes before starting it up again. 55*F now with everything else staying the same--except the ECT was a few degrees higher. Max rwhp was 400.2 and max. rwtq of 472.3. This chip was 'rich' too. The A/F ratio started off at 14.1. From 4,500 rpms, it was at 11.5 and at 5,200, it was at 11.2--also, way too rich?

I Would guess that Sal and JL are erring on the side of conservative A/F ratios to keep us from bringing on detonation. What do you guys think? I was a little disappointed. I had hoped to beat CornarCarver's 3 lb pulley numbers but I didn't. He's got one strong Lightning!

Dan

Good numbers!

With those A/F numbers in hand you should be able to get your tuners to tweak some more HP out of the chips.

GREAT numbers DAN! Let me be the first to welcome you to the 400 CLUB! Lean that bad boy out some and then HOLD ON! BTW, I got the J69 program today. I should be dynoing again very shortly. Maybe I can pick up 4 extra ftlbs and be a member of the 400/500 club.

Thanks guys.

Btw, my best numbers with the PSP chip were 12.697@107.02 while my best with the JL chip(different day--same track) were 12.978@108.25--so far. If you compare the dyno numbers to the 'times/mph, I guess it makes sense. The 'et' was better with the PSP(higher torque by 4.2) while the JL chip gave me a higher mph with 3.9 more hp.

Going to the track again tomorrow and we're supposed to be in the 50s temp wise so I may do better.

Nice numbers! Just out of curiosity.......What did the lines on your graphs look like? Mostly smooth like this:

Or kinda wavy/choppy like this:

Great numbers Dan. When I went to the track last time I kept leaning mine out and the mph picked up everytime. You probably got another 25hp left in her with just some fuel tuning. Of course you are a little disappointed but mail order tuning is tuff enuff. If it were too lean you wouldnt be able to run it at all so look at that as a bright side 11.0-1 is very rich which actually caused me to get some misfires one day at steele. I dont think you are as rich as I was that day . The dyno is great to get a baseline but the track et/mph tell the real story. Was this with your new catback on? When I went to open exhaust on the dyno, I had to lean mine out 8% to get my a/f back to where it was with full exhaust. Tuning big Dan.....thats where its at. Any tuners down our way that could go to the track with ya sometime and tune there?

Cool

Dan,

You're running those cold plugs and 160 stat which might count for some of the richness.

CornerCarver- Your gonna love the J69 program!! That thing has moocho power!! I had his warm weather at first, then the J49. Neither of them compare to the J69! Its truly awesome!! I did notice fuel mileage dropped off a little, but Ill live with it for the power Im getting. Im interested to see your dyno numbers with it.

Skank,

The 401/496 was with the old J7 program. It's very similar to the J69 but the J69 has a few "tweaks". Gotta get everything I can to stay ahead of Dan!LOL

Odin: Sorry I can't show a pic but my graphs have a few of those 'bumps' in them as your second pic shows.

Btw, I just changed my tires out for 1/4 mileing today. I hadn't noticed it yesterday, but there are black 'dots' all over the rt. 1/4 panel--out to the bumper and up on the 'step'. It's a 'spray' of rich fuel I guess? I mean, it's everywhere from the exhaust tips back!

Skank,

I also had Jim's J7 program originally which gave me 402.5/503.4 with an A/F hovering around 13.0-13.2. I dynoed his new J69 program and got 399.7/504.4 with an A/F of 11.0-11.1 in the upper rev range. I had the J69 burned for an upper pulley (which I have not dynoed yet and I don't have the electric fan, Cobra R water pump or 160-degree thermostat in yet either), so I expect my A/F to drop to a more reasonable 12.0-12.5 when I put the upper on.

Hope that helps,

Dan
