Good buy on floor jack?
Good buy on floor jack?
Sears ad in the paper today featured a 3 1/2 ton floor jack with stands for $108, $42 off the regular price. Is this a good buy, and is this jack adequate for the Lightning? If not, what should I be looking at?
After posting the above I visited the Sears web site and found they have a 3 ton hydraulic floor jack, without stands, for $45. It is about 50 lb. lighter than the 3 1/2 tonner. I don't need stands, they would just add more clutter to the garage, and the price is right, so if 3 tons is adequate I think I will spring for it.
Jack stands
Get the stands. When I was a little fella, saw my dad and 5 other men pick up the side of a car to pull some one out from underneath. Jack gave way , he was OK but you can bet he never got under a car again without stands. BE CAREFUL!
alphadoggy, don't mean to bust your bubble but 45 bucks for a jack sounds too cheap to me. It would be nice if you could see them side by side and compare materials, workmanship, warranty and most important, quality. I also agree with others on the board about never going under the vehicle without jack stands, they're a 'must' for me. But also consider, do you want to take a chance with your L with a cheap jack?

If you're really overboard, like I am, I have two of those $45 jacks, AND jackstands- One jack for each side, and 12 ton stands underneath-
My L's been up on them for 3 days now. It's not gonna go ANYWHERE.

Sears jacks suck....they really do. If you want quality, look for a company called Lincoln. Quality jacks and stands that are built to last.

whooooooooo unless you already have the stands, you need them. This was pounded in my head everyday when I was young by my dad. Money is no object when it comes to your life. A good stand is a life saver, and a good jack is even better. I have a 3 1/2 for the garage and I also have a smaller portable jack that is in a case that I keep in the truck , a have several different sizes of stands.
Alphadoggy,
If I am not mistaken, we both live in Southern California, din't we just have an earthquake a couple weeks back. Imagine being under the vehicle when it hits. Use the jack stands and leave the jack in place as a second back up, no pressure on it, just high enough to leave an escape route.
Just my $.02

Blows my mind
that someone would work under a vehicle without stands...and then admit to doing it!
Do you know what you are trusting your life to here? A few O-rings! That is how hydraulics work and all that's holding that jack arm in the air are the O-rings and jack oil! Sure doesn't take much to make them fail. Having worked with lots of hydraulics over the years, I was constantly amazed at how little contamination by dirt, water, etc., it took to mess up hydraulic mechanisms...that's why you always chain up the lift on a forklift before you work on one. Quite a sight when they come crashing down!
Get a clue! Funerals are expensive!
