Talking

A little jack safety wouldn't hurt here. Absolutely, NEVER, NEVER, Crawl under a jacked up vehicle without JACK STANDS. NEVER!!!

I don't use jack stands at the track, but I make sure I am NEVER under anything when the truck is up on the jack.

Only remove one wheel at a time and put on other wheel before removing the other side.

When putting wheel on and removing, keep your feet away from below the tire. Alway assume jack is going to fail at any moment.

When you get wheel on lugs, immediately put two nuts on quickly. That way if jack fails your wheel will stay on and you can get another jack under the axle.

Alway watch jack when jacking, especially if you are jacking on dirt. If it starts to tilt when you go up, let it down and move truck or put plywood under it.

Make sure you understand how to properly release pressure from the jack. It is best to do it slowly. Look around and make sure everyone is clear.

Check lug nuts for tightness after the truck is back on the ground. I've seen guys torque a lugnut and pull the entire vehicle off the jack.

Not that anyone should give a rodent's posterior, but the jack saga continues. Dropped by my local Sears store today, and found some 3 ton jack and jack stands for $99. I asked the salesman where the $49 3 ton jacks were. He said he didn't know of any such item, and showed me a Craftsman catalog where they were conspicuously absent. I told that's funny, I saw it on the Sears web site that very day. He looked bewildered, and another salesman standing by told him, "You know, thats like the internet". I gave up, and told them that I when I got home I would look up the part number.
Not only did I do so, but I called the store and gave the p/n to a salesman, who told me that they had seven of them in stock. I have a dinner/movie date with my wife, but I figure I have enough time to stop at Sears on the way to pick her up and buy the jack. I hop in the trusty V-dub, and race on over to Sears. Run up to the tool department, which has to be on the third floor, and buttonhole the nearest salesman and show him the number, and tell him I want one. They send out search parties, and jack sniffing dogs, and finally locate aforementioned items in a storage room somewhere. The salesman asks me how many I want. I resist the temptation to tell him that I represent Roush racing, and need the current months production, and inform him that one will suffice. He writes it up and I put it on my Sears card. Then he asks me if its OK if go get it at merchandise pick-up. I weigh my options, balancing the travail of toting the damn thing down two flights of escalator vs. waiting at pick-up and possibly being late for the movie. I share my concern with the sales rep, who assures me that he just came from pick-up, and they were not busy there, and that they would get me my package in less than 5 minutes or give me a $5 store credit. Knowing how eager these large corporations are to give away $5 bills, I thought I was home free, and I agreed to pick up the jack downstairs. Those of you suckers, er, I mean, enlightened consumers, who shop at Sears, know they have a pretty neat delivery system. So I put my bar code in the scanner before I even went to move the VW. When I got back the status monitor showed that I was the next customer in queue, and that they had been working on my order for circa 4 minutes. At this point I am rooting for the clock, figuring that in another minute I am 5 bucks to the good, and will still make it to the movie on time. Ten minutes later the odds have changed, I am pi**ed, and I give up, and head out to pick up my esposa. We have a nice dinner with a coupl of libations, and make it to the move (Lantana) in perfect time. For all I know they are still searching for my jack. They can do so till hell freezes over, I am off to Costco tomorrow to see what they have.

Did you get to see one at all? even on the internet?

What is the part number? For $49, I think I may need to replace my old one.

PFA, the Sears p/n is 50143.
And I did visit the Harbor Freight site and the closest thing they had was a 2 1/2 ton jack at $53, and it weighs 70 lbs. Since the Sears 3 ton jack only weighs 54 lbs and I will be lifting it in and out of the truck I guess I will swallow my rancor and go back to Sears and pick it up today.

Thanks Alpha
Don't forget your $5 for your 5 min. Or is that $5 for every 5 min.

blue light special

Isn't there a saying that goes something like " you put a 50 dollar head in a 50 dollar helmet" shop price at the grocery store not on items that save your life. Todd

If it's the Sears "Companion" jack, I have one and it is
barely functional. Won't let down slowly at all, AND
there is NO guarantee on it ...

The CRAFTSMEN 3 or 3 1/2 goes on sale every once
in a while for $99 with jackstands ... If I did it again
I love the "SPEED jack first rise to the frame with one pump"
yellow Craftsmen one.

Try Griots garage. They have those NASCAR style lightweight jacks for at least $600. I'm sure that you could find them cheaper somewhere though. Safety first. My father in law broke is back using a log for a jack stand.

Beware that cheap imitations of jacks used by NASCAR teams usually have a load rating of 1200 - 1500 lb. Consider most Lightning weights in @ ~4800lb, it is getting a bit too close for comfort. Just in case you already have one of everything, check out the real thing here
