Is AMSOIL B.S.?
Is AMSOIL B.S.?
Went to a small car show today and, amongst other vendors, was an Amsoil (synthetic oil) rep. Naturally I asked him to tell me all the pros to using his product instead of the others (Mobil 1, etc.). After reading a post, on this forum a couple of weeks ago, (about the advantages of synthetic oil use), I'm pretty sure this guy was full of B.S.! The only thing I saw that was credible was the "metal wear" factor that was listed as less than 1/2 of it's closest competitor, which was Mobil 1. He also recommended that I use the "marine & diesel" blend with additives for corrosion and extended viscosity. According to that post I referred to, that is something we DON'T want, correct???? Has anybody got a definitive answer, one way or the other? I personally use the Mobil 1 oil & filter (5w30, #210 filter) and would need some pretty compelling evidence to change my ways BUT, even though I am an old dog I CAN learn new tricks! Thanks........... Jack
P.S. If somebody is familiar with that "Synthetic Oil" post, would you please post the link again?

Some say that Amsoil is the best period.......my friend swears by it in his 700+cubic inch drag engines........I used to run it in my old 94 Lightning from time to time.........i know its freaking expensive.......the also claim to be the first in fully synthetic oil.......i dont know if its true or not
As for me and my Gen 1......for the exception of using Amsoil in it like 3 times.......all other oil changes were done with Mobil 1 fully synthetic and Motorcraft 820S oil filters........At 130,000 miles when i traded her for my 00.....i ran the **** out of it.....put everything you possibly could on it........and it never used or burned oil.........And it kept all its power.............i will never use anything else but Mobil 1 just for that reason!!!!!

Sounds like a pretty good reason to me! I wonder if anybody has any technical info we could cross-referrence with the two. I'm am finding it pretty difficult to get "apples to apples" comparisons when reading the labels on these products.
I also run the Mobil 1 and 820S combo, But...I have a very high respect for amsoil products.
Also I think the amsoil dealer has a point about the marine&diesel oil, it would have a very strong additive package that would be good for extended drain intervals. Diesel engines aren't exactly easy on oil, so if its good enough for them it shouldn't be that bad for us.

I have used Amsoil in all of my road-race cars. Everytime the motor has been torn down, all the bearings look great. I use it in all my cars, except for the '76 T/A. I have over 3000 track miles in my '99 FRC Corvette, head&cam stock bottom end. No problems so far. I also use their manual trans and diff oils. I also like the fact they offer it in 20w/50.

Hey guys, appreciate all the feedback. Apparently nobody has been disappointed by this product. What I was really searching for though, was some hard data that would tell me why, or why not, this product is any different, or better, than the others.
Once again, if anyone out there can give me that 'link' to the "Synthetic Oil Use" post (of a few weeks ago) it will be greatly appreciated.

I thought the same thing about amsoil,I have a guy at work that sells it,he sponsored a guy at work on his dragster and after a year of running it mike said he never seen the engine look that good at the end of the season when he tore it down, good enough for me,I'm running 5w-20 syn. the 7500 mile one just for the fact that I still think you need to change the oil in a respectable amount of time,I don't like 25k oil so I bought a 7500k mobil1 filter and away we go.
Amsoil is not BS. Yes some of the Dealers spout BS because they don't know any better.
Usually anything that comes from Amsoil is true, why would they want to tarnish their reputation.
I have seen some modest mpg improvements with Amsoil but nothing like others have claimed.
Also I have a personal friend that switched from Mobil 1 to amsoil in his pathfinder which was using over a quart in 3,000 miles now it barely uses any.
Amsoil makes a comparable product to Mobil 1 that was designed for sale at quick lubes- It has a good basestock and a moderate additive package.
But as far as Amsoil's series 2000 stuff, it really can't be touched as far as performance goes. They got the additive technology from some high line european lube company. Also they use the top of the line base stocks- with a higher amount of esters. If you are really performance oriented this stuff is hard to beat
Also note that Amsoil filters are top of the line, along the same lines as the mobil 1 filters. great effeciency and great capacity.
Here is an online brochure that has some dyno charts with 2.22 hp increase over castol, and 2.75 torque increase.

As far as running the 15w40 diesel oil in your lightning this is probably not a good Idea. I would imagine that your trucks call for the same weight as the rest of them. So stick with something that has xw30 not 40.
Higher weight oil will rob you of hp, it will be harder to pump and will generate more heat.
I have some friends with tricked out cars that run 0w30 with great results. This is what I run in my F150.

Here is some text taken from that brochure, I don't know if Carroll Superchargers are any good or not, I guess you can take if for what it is worth.
AMSOIL Dealer Dave Bigda, owner of Dynamic Auto
of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, installs Carroll
Superchargers that add about 150 HP to a stock
Calloway Corvette engine. Dynamic Auto installs
AMSOIL 100% Synthetic10W-30, ATF, and 80W-90
Gear Lube in all of the vehicles they put Carroll
Superchargers into.
The Carroll Supercharger turns a typical 285 HP
Corvette engine that normally runs at 4200 RPM
into a monster that runs at 3500 RPM and delivers
435 HP. The supercharger makes these high-performance
cars 25-45 mph faster, and as Vette
Magazinesaid, the added horsepower “makes other
Corvette drivers out there wonder if their new Vettes
are pulling a trailer!”
The Carroll Supercharger adds about 6.5 pounds
of boost pressure to an engine which creates much
greater temperatures and slightly higher rates of oil
blow-by (oil blowing by the piston). This makes the
choice of a high-quality engine oil a necessity.
Originally, Greg Carroll, the creator of the supercharger,
specified Mobil 1® as the only lubricant to
use in the engine. He wanted to stress the importance
of using synthetic oil in this high powered
dynamo to such an extent that he installed a small
metal decal on the top of the engine informing customers
to use only Mobil 1®.
He hadn’t heard of AMSOIL yet. After Dave sent a
sample of AMSOIL to Mr. Carroll, that decal came off.
According to Dave, Carroll felt that AMSOIL was superior
to Mobil 1® in protecting engines and drivetrain
components. In other words, it’s the best oil he’s seen.
