That sensor can work two ways since it can tell you when there is knock it then by that very nature tells you when knock is not present. The problem was there was a lot of internal noise in some of the motors and it could produce a false reading. This idea was tried out about two years ago.
I've been testing knock sensor calibrations for 2 years now. There are many functions and tables that need to be tweaked to get it working properly without causing a power loss. It seems like a "simple" thing to turn the knock sensor on, but it's very complex to get it working right in these trucks. Those of you who have been on this board since 99 may remember a certain brand of chips that were calibrated by an ex-Ford engineer. These chips had the knock sensor stuff enabled, and they claimed it was impossible for the truck to ping, but many still did .

Maybe we are understanding this wrong? Is this maybe an add on device that's coming out? The PCM cannot control individual cylinders. If it could, there would be no reason for aftermarket engine management systems like DFI, Speed-Pro, etc..

I hate being the first downer on this. While this sounds great, wasn't Diablosport already claiming 380 rwhp with their current chip setup on a stock L. I bought one from a dealer that pushed it based on the diablosport dyno charts that claimed this. I went to the dyno with my chip and didn't even come close to their claims. I had it reburned by the same dealer because they said I had the wrong file. Still the same results. I'll believe this when I see it and not a minute sooner.

I'm NOT flaming here. I'm just putting out contrasting info for people to weigh before making a decision on this. I went ahead and had my chip reburned a third time by JL for my current mods and the chip is doing fine. I haven't been to the dyno with this setup yet. When I do, I'll compare my other chip to the D-sport and post results.

Great work john. With all my prior experiences with you, I have found you to be very knoledgable and really know your *****. If you are claiming 380 rwhp, than I would take your word for it.

I had that certain chip, the only time it would ping (with 89 octane) was with the race program. It was not given room to pull enough spark. Mine has never pinged on the street program.

Although it is semipossible, in the wrong hands (tooner) this could be very dangerous to your engines. As Sal pointed out the stock ECU was not designed for this type of control.

I think it would be a bit early to say anything negative yet until we see what the product is.

If it delivers on the promises, that'll be a nice piece!

Its amazing how people start shouting out idea and before you know it, someones knocking the idea JL has.

You know what guys, just give diable some time to release it. What do you think people thought when first had the idea of cell phones? Thats all I use now!

Good work JL, I'll be interested in one for sure!

Johnny,

There is a product that will do this and is in use by the CART Teams. I looked into it and the $20,000 price tag was too steep for me. If Diablo has invested in this type of program and technology I believe it will be revolutionary for the Lightnings. It does enable each cylinder to be tuned indivually and is manufactured by a company in Rockford IL. Johnny, If you would like I can e-mail you the Info and you can compare.

Sal and Silver Bullet, You are both right. I also had one of those chips that enabled the knock sensors and I didn't like it.

I have nothing against JL AT ALL. In fact I think he's a great guy from what I know of him. A #1! He's just passing on what D-sport is telling him. From my experience with D-sport, they can't be trusted to represent their products 100% accurately. I'm not saying they have a bad product. He!!, I use their product. It's just not the holy grail of chips that they paint it up as. By not delivering on their claims in the past, they have made me skeptical about any claims they make. Maybe John has seen this new product in action and knows it works already. If not, I would be nervous about making a pitch for it in advance of the actual finished product.

If I'm wrong for trying to keep other L owners feet on the ground, then I'm wrong. This sounds like a great product. I hope it works just as advertised. I'd love to feel safer about the mods I have on my truck. I just don't want a false sense of security. Thanks.

RTKILLA- Don't you know that cell phones will fry your brain. LOL

I don't see where anyone is knocking it? Just restating what is pretty much accepted. Most guys expect 370-380rwhp with a chip.

If it is indeed a new chip program, then it's nothing to be really exicted about. I expected 380 at the wheel with a chip ANYWAY. Now with that being said, yes there are some gains in being able to advance/retard timing in real time... it means you don't have to have a re-burn and should get better milage. A good thing.

Is it just a reburn with an existing Diablosport chip, or is there something else?

I really hope you're onto something, as detonation has been my biggest problem with chips, especially on 91 octane...

Good Luck!!!
