For all you guys that have installed a 160 degree thermostat...

I'm getting ready to do it too--Hypertech #1011. Have you had any problems because of it? Fouled plugs(which plugs?)? Does the eng. keep enough 'heat' to put out all the HP it can? Any driveability concerns?

I'm doing it to keep 'detonation' at bay with my 5lb pulley.

Thanks,

Dan

I had one in all my f-bodies with no problems. I haven't put one in my L yet though.

I run the 160. No problems. Ran it in the 99 motor and in the current 01 motor. I have the stock plugs still. Running a 4# pulley. I like it.

'Rod,

MAKE SURE you have PLENTY of terry towels handy as coolant goes everywhere, including places it should not (ie: spark plug 'well')

Also grab a fresh roll of shop towels to soak up the coolant as it seeps up from the block.

...or just drain the block altogether... DOH!

Talking

I've been running one for over a year with no problems. After wasting the money on a hypertech, I found out you can get one at any good autoparts store for about $10.00.

Thumbs up Best low priced mod you can buy!

Best bang for the buck mod you can buy,i have had no problems at all with plenty of heat in this 20 degree air.I went to the dyno and had the 170 stat and 160 stat dynoed and could not believe that little $20 mod made that much difference. It dropped my air-fuel from 12.4 to 12.0 and made 10ft.pounds of torque over the 170 stat.

Hey High Roller, What??? Did you really see a power difference on the dyno with the 160o stat?? Was it a "dead up" apples to apples comparison? If so I am truly impressed and when you confirm I will be picking one up within the hour!!! Happy Holidays........jack

Cool

Hey Jackman,
I first dynoed my stock 180 then put the 170 stat in and my air-fuel dropped slightly and minimal power gain then i decided to try the 160 stat and it made alot bigger difference on the dyno all through the powerband and dropped my air-fuel down even more,if you go to search you will find my post on this a few months ago for the exact findings.

Cool

Dan,

I did an experiment about a year and a half ago on the 180 and 160 stats. They run close to 10 degrees hotter than the advertised temp. I ran a 160 for over a year with no ill effects. Make sure the thermostat you get has an extended staft with a washer on the end like the stock one. This closes off a passage when the stat is open to force more water to the back of the block for better cooling. If you drain the radiator real good (about a 1 and 3/4 gallons) the level will be low enough to not make a mess. Here is a link to the experiment info and a pic of what the stat should look like.

Okay, here we go. A short while back I posed the Q "what happens with no stat at all?". I understood the answer that the temp drops too low but in addition was a long explanation by a poster named Undy regarding power output and cylinder temps. It went on to explain that the higher the cylinder temp was- the more horsepower was made. The explanation was that the only cooling we wanted was intake air temps, typically done by the intercooler and aftermarket coolers. Sooooo..... you know my next Q is ........ HUH? What I have heard and read so far is that a lower temp tstat produces more torque and a higher temp tstat produces more horsepower. You know my next Q is.......HUH? Is that possible? Don't the horsepower and torque output usually travel in the same general direction when dealing with a simple factor like temps? I'm going to slide over to that explanation on SVTPerf and check the date and i'll post it here so we can get some good commentary. Thanks and Happy New Year!

I'll give up a few horsepower for the sake of running a tad richer, just to be on the "safe side". Hell, I've already got more than enough horses to outrun LIGHTNINROD!

In a perfect world ie. Wintson Cup car, what you say is true, "the hotter you run it, the more power it will make". But these guys have the ability to isolate every little thing so they can tell what is doing what.

Unfortunately, our trucks are not perfect. That little thermostat controls alot of variables. Everything from enine oil temp, trans oil temp to underhood air temp is effected by the thermostat.

HIGH ROLLER has done a lot of good dyno work and I learn a little bit everytime he post another test. If you read what he says, from 180 to 170 not much happens but when you drop to 160 the truck richens up by almost 1/2 a point in A/F. I don't know if the computer doesn't like the 160 and this is the byproduct of that or what, but the bottom line is the truck runs richer and it likes it.

Maybe its telling us to go back to 170 and send our chips back in and have them recalibrated for richer A/F. I know it works on my truck. I run the 170 now and have a much richer running chip and the truck runs on straight 92 octane and has NEVER made this much power before.
Just a thought
Dale
