California CHIP and PULLEY users only
with the new lower octane (91); I'm curious as to which chip and pulley combo is working out best for you without pinging? if you have a non-stock MAF, please note that too.. Thanks in advance..
I ask because I have had previous detonation issues with my Swanson and Pro-M, I'm now considering a different set-up with a new lower pulley.

JL also set mine up to 91 octane, and I use my truck as a daily driver. I have the 3lb pulley along with the JL Diablo chip, everything works great altogether, i've heard no pinging or anything. I use 76 gas and Chevron , no pinging.

You're truck pings because you have too much timing for the crap gas. Just have Danny Pull some timing. The gas has gotten worse in the past few months, I have gone back a few times to have timing pulled. And to the best of my knowledge Danny has never blown a motor. Talk to Jay Lincoln he just installed a pulley anlong with his swanson chip/ pro-m.
I have the Pro-M mass air, Swanson Custom Chip and PSP lower pulley running on 91 octane. Try that one! I made several WOT blasts around the block, until Danny had pulled out enough timing to eliminate the pinging. We then made 5-6 dyno pulls, adding fuel, as the the peak Hp increased slightly. We only experienced detonation on one of the pulls, so Danny aborted and dialed back timing.
If you want absolute maximum performance, you have to tune this way. Trucks perform differently with the same mods, so the chip will need tweaking. You can keeping sending or taking the chip back to any tuner for minor changes, but a few hours on a dyno, and you are finished. To me, time is money. I'd rather spend $200 with Danny Swanson on the dyno, than keep going back for reburns. I think that any of the tuners here will agree.
I would be willing to bet, the tuneup Danny put into my truck might need adjustment for a different one. It would, however get you pretty close to start, and you wouldn't have to make a dozen runs around Torrance, terrorizing the locals like I did.
Chad has seen my dyno graphs, and they are good ones. I picked up a lot of hp and torque in the mid RPM ranges, where it is more useful in daily driving. On 91 octane, I made 384 Hp and 460 lbs of torque. These are SAE corrected numbers, on an enginer with 34,000+ miles on it.
The gas here varys enough to make the trucks detonate on one brand of 91, but not another. I have run 76 with no detonation, but occasionally the truck will ping on Shell or Chevron.
One of the reeasons I believe is that 76 has not used MTBE, but developed an alternative 5-6 years ago. The other refiners used MTBE, and are no reformulating (again). Most are using corn squeezings (ethanol).
I have just returned from a business trip where I travelled about 800 miles in the last two days. The truck performed flawlessy, without a hint of detonation.

Jay,
Was that you on the 101N going through Oxnard that was honking at me?
Just curious.
Im going to be at LACR on Friday. Friend is running his 64 El Camino so I thought I'd take the L down and see what it would do... Not expecting much as that track is horrid....But it will be fun none-the-less..

Dale01L,
I went through Oxnard last night about 7:00 PM. Southbound, so it probably wasn't me.
LACR is better than you think. It's gotthe beat traction around, byt it is 2700' above sea level. it's not uncommon to have corrected altitude op there around 4000'.
I'm going to try to be at Irwindale on Thursday night.
