Talking Turned from the Darkside

New member here. You all must take the blame for converting me to a Lightning from my 2000 SS Camaro. I pick up my new 2001 on Saturday. Seems like a long ways away. The more and more I saw and read about Lightnings I knew I had to have one. My Chevy buddies think I'm crazy. Low and behold great interest rates come along. My wife works for Ford so I just had to find a dealer willing to do " A " plan. After missing out on a red one I found a white one at a dealership 200 miles away (one of the last 2 L's in the state). That's where I'm headed Saturday.

Few questions for you guys. I know the break-in procedure is very important. The trip is about 200 miles by highway. Do I just need to keep it under 55mph and vary the RPM? I really don't want to put it on a flatbed. Also, I was only able to drive a used 2000 model. Does the new Billstein suspension ride that much better than the previous?

Thanks for a great forum that helped sway me in the right direction!!!

Jeff

Congrats and welcome to da family!! I also went from a chevy to the L! I bought mine in Dallas and drove it home(about 200 miles)
I varied the speed from 70-90 on the hwy. The 01's do ride, handle, and perform better than the 99-00's. When ya get the extra $$$, you've got to put a chip in it....runs lots better.
Did you ever have the SS on the track? I ran one last week on the street and took him 4-5 lengths any way he wanted to run!
Cool guy, although he thought I was spraying him.LOL!

Just enjoy the drive,I don't think it is possible to keep it under 55 LOL, I would vary the speed some.
I think you will like the Billstein shocks, they do smooth out the ride a little bit.

Skank Dog, what did you trade in on your L? I've only had the SS to the track once in the year that I've had it. Stock it ran a 13.7 at 106 with a crappy 2.4 60ft. Right now it's probably a high 12second car. I know what you mean about the modding. I'm already doing homework on a chip and intake. I still have to find time to strip my speed parts off of my car and sell them. That's a good kill against and LS1. My problem is here in town I can never get anybody to race me? Maybe that will change with the L.

Don, thanks for the reassuance. I can't imagine I'll be able to loaf along at 55 either. I have the Billstein setup on my car and I really like it. I was just a little disappointed that I couldn't find a 2001 to drive before I bought mine. Faith I guess.

Thanks for the replies.

KINGPIN- I traded a '90 chevy truck that was modded to hell! It still wouldnt have come close to the L! I took the L to the track one time when it had 800 miles on it! The only mod was a chip and k&n panel filter. It went 13.5 @102 in 90 deg. heat with a 2.076 60ft. time. I now have 2000 miles on it with the upper blower pulley, and pulls a hell of alot harder!! Having the lower pulley put on this weekend @ FFW in Ennis by JDM. I'll post those mid 12 time slips next week!! There are guy's on this board turning high 11's WITHOUT the juice!

Oh yeah, get use to MRBBQMAN, He's this sites "Mr. Funnyman"
Cracks everybody up with his post's!!!

Break-in....

Congrats on your truck Kingpin...you will love it!

After I sold my 99, I flew from Tx to Baton Rouge, LA to pick up my 2001. When I made it home, the odometer read 872 miles (only 12 at the dealership). It was almost broke-in by then...70 mph avg on the way home with one WOT blast to 100. I just couldn't help it

And yes, MRBBQMAN is so darn funny, or something...

When we picked up the '01 L it had 12 miles on it. Due to the fact that we had traded in 2 vehicles (I have way too many), we had the 2500lb car trailer to get back home (1200 miles). We made a nice vacation out of it. When you are in California, you are always varying the speed so she has been broken in real nice.

Even got to test out her snow legs as there was a blizzard going on when we got home (wasn't great, but the trailer helped).

Presently has 11,000 trouble free miles. You cannot even imagine what it is like to own one, till you do. Hope your are not the introverted type, because these trucks attract more attention than anything I have ever seen. Can also bring a smile to your face faster than anything you will ever drive.

Can't tell I love this truck, can ya
