avoiding the chip and dealer fiasco
avoiding the chip and dealer fiasco
would there be any problem replacing your "chipped" computer for a new stock one? I have been told that the local dealer will physically remove the computer to see if the contacts have been cleaned to instantly tell if there "was" a chip installed. I think installing a fresh "virgin" computer would eliminate any evidence of a chip ever being in a vehicle. The only thing is where is the mileage for the odometer stored?
I wonder what one of these boxes runs from Ford?
Any opinions?

I had the same thoughts...Anyone know how tough and expensive is it to get a spare computer? I'm sure it does'nt look to good when your go to parts desk at the Dealer say Hey I'd like to order some seat covers, wheel locks, a bedmat, and oh yeah a computer also.
Spiro, was there a Ford part # associated with the computer (CUX1)? Or does anyone else have it? Please post it, I want to call the parts discounter and get the prices.

I plan to sell the computer with the truck in late November, but thanks for the info Sal.
NX,
Not quite sure about the "specific" part #, but I am ure they will be able to understand what your looking for. I may be wrong about this....but I dont think that you can get a CUX1 anymore, it will probably have to be a CUX2.
Hope this helps.

You cannot get a CUX1 PCM, unless you get one out of another Lightning. When Ford updates a PCM, that's what you get when you try to order a new one. Anybody who tried to order a CUX1 PCM, will get a CUX2 PCM.
Also, you can't just "plug it in". The new PCM has to be configured to the truck, and the PATS has to be reset in the HEC module. This must be done anytime you put a new PCM in, even if it's the original one. Since only the dealer can do this, it's kind of a mute point to try to get a spare.

Man oh man I can't believe that some dealers would pull the PCM to see if the contacts were worn from a chip. These shops must not be Flat rate. I think the whole chip V's warranty is getting way out of control. I just read a post from Sal stating Ford was thinking about becoming more Mod friendly. Also like Spiro said it's not just a swap in and out unless you have a NGS and a card to gain Access for PATS.

I've asked these questions before and never got an answer but let's try it again.
1: If I do get a new computer and get the PATS setup is it in nonvolitile memory? Will it keep the memory for the PATS system when out of the truck?
2: Can the PATS system be setup with the computer out of the truck?

Bob,
I may be wrong, but I do believe that the computer needs to be in the truck during the process. And once that is done, you could pull the computer out all day long and it would still work for you. There have been times when my computer has been out of the truck for close to a week, No problems

Or come up with some waxy glue to cover the connector back over. Isn't there some other way for them to tell though? I wonder what the edge connector was originally designed for. I know it wasn't to bait us in to voiding our warranty.
