With all this talk of Spark Plugs...any word on the new MSD unit??
Anyone have the MSD unit yet??
Tested??
Results???
I think I will stick with my good old NGK's for plugs.

my thought exactly brian!
if its good to have better plugs,
wouldnt it be even better to have an upgraded ignition?
like, if person "A" swaps their plugs out for some triple throwdown badass plugs,
and person "B" puts in a upgraded ignition & some better than stock plugs.
which person would be better off?
if they make an upgraded ignition that just plugs in, i'm gonna get it! (i've got some TR6's waiting to go in)

btw- swapped my bedcover tail light out after you gave me the info.. looks and works great! THANKS!

They are probably not making it because it won't provide anything over the stock setup. Just like those junk splitfire plugs. Look, you have a coil on plug ignition. Absolutely the best you can have. So good that every car manufacture is going to it. It will fire a pulg submerged in oil. It will fire a plug with NO ELECTRODE. Ask 1BADTK. MSD is junk. Thats why most people that run it have two under the hood so when one fails they can switch. If you don't think the stock ignition is hot I invite you to remove one put a screwdriver in the end, hold on to it and ask your buddy to turn the engine over.

Noel,
Have you ever ran any Splitfires? If you haven't then your opinion of them is meaningless. There are a bunch of us running them with great sucsess compared to the very very few who didn't have any luck with them.
There is some testing going on right now with Splits that shows some promising results. That is all I can say about this at the present time.
Fast1Matt has been running splits and had a little pinging problem. Since he put the PSP pulley on it might have pushed him over the edge on leaness. He was already running a ProM so the combination calls for a reburn. My point is that he has rattled the motor a few times with no plug failure. He usually puts in a gallon of 104 at the track to solve the problem. He makes a pass or two at first with different brands of gas to see if it still does it. It looks like it's not the gas. I would say it's probably the ProM causing most of the problem because the pulleys usually don't.

MSD is junk? Come to the pits sometime and see what people use in actual race cars. Some of us that actually drive sub 8 second cars may disagree with you about your opinion of MSD. Have fun in the 12s...
A spark will only jump one gap - in other words, it will travel the path of least resistance. Thus, if you use a multi electrode plug, it will not suddenly cause 2 or more sparks to jump. Electricity does not work that way. If you put in new plugs vs old, or change the heat range, you will see a performance difference. But simply swapping plugs to mutliple electrodes will not do anything. Furthermore, Splitfires have very thin electrodes. I have personally seen them broken off into the cylinder. In once case, scoring the wall up in a motorcycle engine. There are some bosch plugs with 4 electrodes, these won't break. But the spark will always only jump one gap. Now, I suppose if an electode gets messed up, having the spare may help, but this is unlikely. I personally would not risk breaking the splitfire off. my 2 cents
Thank you Iron Machine. MSD is great when compared to an old GM stock coil on cars in the 50s and 60s; however, they still have a reliability problem and they are not better than whats on our trucks.

Iron Machine,
Your way behind the curve. This has been established along time ago. It's the design of the plug that lets it fire out of three sides instead of two that produces the increased throttle response. There is another benefit that's being tested that will come out when finished.

Yea I agree with you. We have been running MSD on our sub 5.80’s alcohol funny car for several years now. MSD is Very reliable. ( Yea we got the most expensive boxes they got ) It’s one thing to fire a plug with a mere 8 to 12 lbs of boost on top of 8 to 1 compression. It’s quite another story to fire a plug with 45 to 50 lbs of boost on top of 13 to 1 compression with alcohol. In the old days ( Mid 90’s) we used a pair of 50k mags with 2 plugs per cylinder on the Brad heads. It took both plugs to keep em lit with the mags. We replaced the dual mags with a single MSD and plugged the second plug hole. The MSD keeps em lit all the way down the 1320 and picked up a few tenths in the process. And yes, we also ran a pair of MSD’s on 2 plugs per cylinder as well. However the data showed 1 set was sufficient.
After gathering a ton of data ( We use on board data acquisition computers to gather data during the run ) To me the bottom line is this. If you have more than enough fire to keep em lit under boost, it makes little difference what plug you use. (Yes it must have the proper heat range) If you are on the edge of having enough fire then different plugs will make a difference in response and overall performance. As for longevity, I don’t have any data as we use a new set of plugs for every run.
Now before everyone jumps off of the deep end here, I am talking about WOT on alcohol Funny Cars not our L’s. This is a whole different world. I’ll stop right there as I am recovering from major surgery and our team is at the US Nationals WHERE I SHOULD BE …. CrAP.. I said that out loud and now my wife is on my a$$ again about going … I don’t drive em I wrench on em.
As for our L’s
One would have to equip an L with a data acquisition system (you need more than the OBD-II provides) and do extensive testing before one could speak with confidence. Hence I have nothing to say about what plugs to use…
Just my frustrating .02
I SHOULD BE AT INDY .. DO YOU HEAR THAT LITTLE WOMAN!!!! .. She did ..
I am sleeping in the dog house now for sure…
Sorry for the long post… I SHOULD BE AT INDY!!!!!!!!!

its a wise tail....call Jacobs Electronics outta Midland...
if they were that good...the manufacturers would have gone with them years ago....and what pro Nascar team uses Spitfires??? NADA....that equals ZILCH....

letter i received from msd reads has follows....
Dear Sir,
The MSD Stacker Ignition P/N 7020 is designed for engines that are equipped with a coil per cylinder up to 8 coils. This unit delivers a powerful Capacitive Discharge sparks to improve combustion that will increase performance. The unit is not a direct plug in you will have to tee in the the factory coil trigger wires. This Stacker ignition will be available late summer 2001.
Thanks,
MSD Tech
for all who inquire...
