dark_ horse,i was agreeing with you that on a performance basis,it makes no sense to trade.

However, Ford claims a drive train loss of less than 11% in the Lightning, so your truck actually only had to make about 370 h.p. to yield 330 hp on the dyno. This is well within manufacturing variability. My '00 dynoed 323 h.p. stock, which equates to 363 crank h.p. With a chip and MAF the h.p. went up to 360, which translates to 406 hp at the crank. So basically I agree with you, why would I take a huge financial beating to get an '02 when my truck already makes 26 more h.p? But speaking of financial beatings, why would anyone consider trading their truck in on a new one? You always get hosed on a trade.
alphadoggy,

I don't know what to make about this 11% drive train loss that everyone mentions? I've also heard 20% as much as 11% on this forum.

That number (11%) just doesn't seem correct from my past expeirences.

Maybe Ford ment that the transmission loss is 11%, but you also have to remember that the diff makes a 90 degree power transfer turn to the axle. This is a major power loss.

If you combine the two (transmission and diif) then 20 % seems more ideal.

But I've been wrong before.

BTW I did the easy math 1.2 x 330 = 396 for 20% loss it sould of been more like 330 x 1.25 =412.5, I'll just call this lazy forum math.

Let me try it this way -
The Drive Train includes torque converter, auto trans, 2 u-joints, and the differential. These are all things that do not have a direct connection. The most important point to remember is ANY loss must be converted into heat. When the torque converter is "locked", the TC becomes a very efficient device. The transmission itself has the majority of losses, which is why it needs to be cooled. The u-joints are very efficient and don’t get hot. The differential is also very efficient - it’s just a gear set, maybe a 1½ to 2% loss, or again it would get very hot. The 20% drive train loss is a feel good number that dynojet operators use to make customers happy.

Not true. The change in horsepower came from different, bigger lower intake runners and a bigger intercooler which allows more air in and increases the horsepower rating.

PS The replacement intercooler for the leaking 99-00 is NOT the same as the 01 intercooler.

Better air flow......novel idea. So, if I buy the lower manifold and new intake and new intercooler for the 2001 and put it on my '99..............I wonder?

Looks like you'll have to put yourself down for one of those "Wrath of Kahn" awards. The intercooler for the 99-00 kit is 1L3V-6K775-CA. The intercooler on the 2001 trucks is 1L3V-6K775-CA. They are the same.

Are you sure they are the same??? If so then they have to replace the whole blower because the bolt pattern is different.

:P

I thought they would go with a 6.8 Liter S/C V-10 (475 hp) with the Cobra R 6 speed and IRS.

I can dream,

Rex
