There hasn't been any official numbers published by Ford yet, although I suspect that the 2002 will be the same as 2001.

I would really love to know the answer to this question. I am considering trading the 00 for an 01. If there are going to be any major changes besides one color it may be worth it to wait. Anyone have any insight??

Thanks!
Sam

My dealer said the 02 L would have ten more hp,but i doubt they actually know for sure that there will be an 02 produced.I was told this info when getting a trade in value on my 00 towards an 01 which they have 8 of.

Well, my dealer can beat up your dealer. He told me yesterday that there will be no mechanical changes on the '02s, just cosmetic, including the new blue color. I don't know why anyone would trade for a measly 10 hp, anyway, it would cost a lot more money than a couple mods that would gain you a lot more, like a chip and 90mm intake.

they better do something to sell the 02's, otherwise they will sit on lots with all the 01's and all of us, waiting for the 03's (which we will all be trading for)

From the dyno posts I have seen on the '01s maybe Ford just Raised the hp # to where it should be and didn't actually change anything.Kind of like they did with the later model 5.0 mustangs. They went from 225 hp to 215hp without changing a thing.Just a thought.

why?

Is it just me or what?

My stock 99 made 330 RWHP times 20% for driveline lose = 396 crank HP, um is 390 crank HP for 2002 really significant?

On top of that with a simple chip I made 360 RWHP, which equals, 432 crank HP, so now Ford can say that the 2003 now makes 430 crank HP?

Now we have Sal making 405 RWHP, which comes out to 486 crank HP from a 01 with a few tricks. If you took any G2 lightning I suspect a 99 – 02 would make the exact same HP with the same tricks.

Why would anyone sell their older Lightning for a sales pitch where their new total HP is less then their current Lightning, someone clue me in on this one or I’m going to start selling bridges for a living?!?!?!

According to Sal most of the newer Lightnings make their new famed HP by Tweaking on the ECU anyhow, on a basically stock 99 truck.

I guess if the 2002 came in yellow I’d fall for it too.

dark horse, agree with you 100% 99-00 not as quick stock but exactly the same modded. One thing to remember is my 00 ran a 10th quicker some where between 15-19 k but i used mobil 1 from 500 miles on.The point is i don,t think the 01s are even close to broke in yet for a fair comparison. The only reason i was considering an 01 was no one new if there would be an 02-03 and with 27k on mine, and not being my main ride and the fact that i can get x plan,i thought it would be wise to check into a zero mile 01. Flinstone the dealer will do x plan on any color 01 but they only offered me 22k for my 00 which has lo pro, billet grills ect, ect. So i said no way.7k difference in price plus 3-4 k in peformance/apperance mods.I actually talked to an uncle recently that retired from ford[used to maintain company jet] and he said he thought he could get me a plan, but still 6k plus mods nahhh.

Come on Greg just go out and get a new white 01 and take off most of your mods on your 00 and sell them but put the throttle body on the new 01 and get the pulley and chip for it and run the same times as you are now and only have to spend $500 in mods to do it!I will be up on wednesday night or saturday morning to meet up with lightning jeff when his dad rents out the track that day!

ib fast,

I hope that you don’t think that I was attacking your opinion; I was just focusing on the fact that Ford can say that their new 2003 can make 430 crank HP and nothing has really changed from a stock 99 with an optimized chip.

Sorry if I said something that upset you, that was not my point.

Its not you, horsie, its just your math. With a drive train loss of 20% your 99 would need to make 412+ h.p. at the crank to yield 330 rwhp (mighty stout for a '99, but not unheard of). However, Ford claims a drive train loss of less than 11% in the Lightning, so your truck actually only had to make about 370 h.p. to yield 330 hp on the dyno. This is well within manufacturing variability. My '00 dynoed 323 h.p. stock, which equates to 363 crank h.p. With a chip and MAF the h.p. went up to 360, which translates to 406 hp at the crank. So basically I agree with you, why would I take a huge financial beating to get an '02 when my truck already makes 26 more h.p? But speaking of financial beatings, why would anyone consider trading their truck in on a new one? You always get hosed on a trade.
