How to get wheel locks off WITHOUT a key?

Hypothetically...
If you misplace the key to your wheel locks, how the heck do you get them off?

Hypothetically....

Thanks,

Rich,

I believe that Snap-On Tools has a kit with various special sockets that slip over the wheel locks and remove them
without damage to the wheel or wheel lock. I've seen this tool with my own peepers and I'm pretty sure it was made by Snap-On but it could have been Mac or Matco also. One of the better tool manufacturers anyway. Good luck.

All you need to do is find a 12 point socket that is a little too small
and bang it on with a hammer. I used to work at an auto parts store and did it a couple of times on peoples cars. Or Like SVTRob said you could buy a specialty tool.

If you have no tool, really need to get it off, and your not trying to steal someone elses wheels ;-) J/K

Find a socket that almost fits on, but not quite. Tap it over the wheel lock with a rubber mallet.

You now have a socket with a permanentely embedded wheel lock.

Several years ago I misplaced the key and couldn't take the wheels off. I went to Discount Tire and they used a socket with serrated edges on the inside and an impact wrench to remove the lock. The only charge was the cost of replacement locks.

Saw this with my own eyes....

having my new ET Streets & wheels fitted/checked a few wks. ago at a locally owned tire business.....lady had brought in a used/newly purchased Lexus...neede brake work.....wheel locks/no key.......out came the air-powered chisel....off came the locks. Btw, the lady was seated in the office...she never saw this.

What type of lock is it?

1. Do you have the type with the rotating sleeve around the outside od a hex nut. (Drill out the center and remove the sleeve)

Or

2. The type with an internal cloverleaf type pattern (order replacement from manufacturer as these are very hard to remove-there was a key identification tag in the box when you bought them)

As you can see, I've never lost keys to wheel locks.

The correct answer was...... 3/4" socket and a firm spanking.

I promise to only use this power for good.

Thanks for all the help.

Hit it with a little liquid nitrogen and then tap it with a hammer. The stud will brake right off. I believe this is how the high tech theves do it so they don't damage the wheels they're stealing.

Noel:

As luck would have it, I just ran out of liquid Nitrogen.

Blackmarket stem cell research has really kept me busy lately, or something....

You could use the hypothetical socket on it or something.

Hypothetically, I did.

Didn't even damage the locks in the event that I someday find the key...
