Question Mustang FR500 steering wheel, anyone put one on an L?

I bought an FR500 wheel for my recently sold Cobra but never installed it. I also noticed that the steering wheel looks identical to the Mustang one. I'd hate to have this steering wheel go to waste, so does anyone know if there is a problem installing this wheel on the L? Pics would be cool if anyone has done this.

Thanks a bunch

Haven't seen it but....

The one thing I can think of that may be different, is the Lightning steering wheel has backlit buttons for the cruise control, and the Cobra does not. I don't know if you'd be able to retrofit or not...?

I did notice that as well BUT, the switches from the original wheel must be transferred to the new wheel. I think I'll give it a shot. I'll take some pictures during the process and maybe make up a little tech article

I don't know how popular a "mod" like this would be especially considering the wheel costs about $150. I'll keep in touch with details...

I have been thinking about this for the past 4 months, I was about to call up Dawns Ford and ask the very same question.

I'm not sure why you'd want to do this? The only significant difference I see is that it says Cobra.

You are not replacing the center portion, just the wheel itself, the outter portion. And the difference is that it is thicker because of additional padding which helps grip and comfort. There are "grippies" to also aid turning.

I don't think it will work

My understanding is it will not work.
I was told ith has something to do with different Clock Spring designs between the Mustang and the F150.

Hmm if it will not work on the Lightning...might work well on that wussy thin steering wheel on my Saleen.

well...

I removed the airbag and noticed:

1. I will need a different type of wheel remover than I have. The one I have has threaded holes and the one needed for the L will be like a claw puller.

2. After removing the torx head screw, I noticed that the wheel and steering hub have teeth to interconnect them. The Mustang wheel has two flat spots on the steering hub and two flat spots on the wheel to interconnect them. I thought I had noticed some flat spots on the L's hub but without removing the wheel, I can't be certain.

3. The clock springs is different from the Mustang BUT it has nothing to do with the wheel as all the cruise buttons will be used on the new wheel.

So, once I get my hands on a claw type puller, I will be able to tell if the new wheel will mount. I will keep you all updated
