Correct part # is XL3Z-9424-AB. Cooler is 10 rows thick. Have not seen a 01 apart yet. Have seen 99 and 00 and this is not the same cooler. It is wider and better built with thicker ends. When a vehicle is registered to a new owner you should get all recall and ONP info from Ford. Will keep all posted if I here anything else.

Out of Warranty Ls

Are they going to make owners that have out of warranty Ls pay for the fix or are they going to fix it since they screwed up?

Per SVT's hotline (7/23/01) they will replace a leaking IC if out of warranty.
The dealer may give you some #$%& but SVT said they will make it right. From what I understand there will be no official "recall" but a notification and TSB.

The dealer must validate the leak through a pressure/die test first.

Thumbs down

So Ford wants me to wait for my intercooler to start leaking BEFORE they replace it, even though there is a fix. Jeez they don't do that with brake recalls......

Couldn't cost a fraction of what it's costing to replace those Firestones....

A bad product is a bad product, whether it endangers the car owner or not.

And you don't know why they would replace possible faulty brakes but not a possible faulty intercooler?

I was making the point that they will correct problems involving safety in a timely manner, but other quality issues are not a concern. I guess I shouldn't put too subtle a point on responses...

My truck is sitting at Cal Worthington Ford as I type this.

And it has been there since last Tuesday. They tried to get me to bring it in the Monday before, but I before I left to get the keys to the almighty ZTEC powered Focus, I asked if they had all the parts. Ofcourse they do, but they checked to be sure. Good thing they did that. They didnt have all the parts.

I talked to my friends at Ford on Friday, you know its bad when they recognize your voice, then proceed to spell your last name for you. They said they pulled the supercharger off and looked down and saw a nice pile of teflon coating. They were surprized that I did not notice much of a loss of power. Had a new supercharger on its way, Vehicle Down Alert or something. Cool, I thought. New supercharger, I can live with this Focus for the weekend. Just die my hair blond and hope no one recognizes me. All those guys in the Camaros, Cobra's and Vette's would have a heyday picking on me.

I called my service writer up, he's cool, and tell him about this slick new part, he tells me that they have already put on the replacement intercooler, and in short, too bad. Today he says the new supercharger is here, and its going on tomorrow. Truck should be done later this week.

Looks like I am going to go through all this again in about 20k miles. I tried to get him to order this 'fix' but no luck.

Tell them to call Ford Tech hotline. They should not need approval to do this repair since it is a replacement part for old part #.

Angry Should be a recall

I'm glad the parts are finally out, it's about time.
This should be a recall not an ONP. Glad I got the extended warranty.

Question

Question for someone regarding the part number mentioned earlier in this post. My truck is in for the leak (among other things) and the dealer indicated that the part they have on order is #XL3Z-6K775-BA not #XL3Z-9424-AB. The parts guy told me the 9424 number is for an intake manifold. Maybe the 9424 is all of this together. I just don't want to wait and wait just to find out they ordered the wrong part and then wait some more. On the #XL3Z-6K775-BA, he indicated it was an intercoooler assembly. Does anyone know exactly what these 2 parts are and if either includes all the related gaskets, etc. needed??

srelight, I believe it was posted earlier in this thread that the "fix" IS an Intake Manifold complete with the SC bolted to it. If that is the case then the intake vs intercooler part # question your parts guy has would make sense. you want the intake.

#XL3Z-9424-AB is the complete kit needed to do the latest fix Ford has issued. It is a new intercoller, and upper intake, along with 3 gaskets.
