55 HP from SHM PI heads
Ok I just got done talking with a guy who said that SHM can get 55HP from a set of 5.4 PI heads like the ones on our L's. I thought this wasn't possible. Anybody here get a five angle job done on there's. he also said the heads on the 4.6 would fit on a 5.4 and vise versa. Is that true also. Just wondering. His truck sounds like its going to be bada$$ though.

With a good, valve job, polish and porting of heads it is not uncommon to get an additional 55HP or more with heads.

I admit I only know what I have read about the heads on these trucks, but this is what everyone else but those guys are telling me. These swirl heads don't have much more in them! Found some people talking big numbers but when I asked them for garrantees (as I will dyno after) the number they talk about drops to 15 hp - 20 hp. Be sure to make yourself clear on the garrantee, not just the heads but labor. We are talking alot of money for 20 hp.

This is what I think also, allot of guys on here have had that done to the heads, High risk is selling his. I know how stang heads that get that kind of gain, but nobody has confirmed anything with a L yet. I think he needs to talk to SHM again, caust he said they cost 2500 to port and polich also. I heard that and chit a brick. I would rather drop a new 351 motor in then do that.
The reason 302 and 351W motors benefit from different heads is b/c the stock heads are pretty darn restrictive. They have small ports (especially on the exhaust side).
Porting a stock 302/351 head is a complete waste of time, IMHO, with all the very good aftermarket offerings. You'd be _lucky_ to get 50+hp from porting a STOCK casting.
So, YES, you can get that kind of HP out of an aftermarket 302/351 head.
But, on the 5.4...I don't think anyone makes an aftermarket head for them. I will say this...if someone can get 55hp from porting a stock set of heads, then Ford left a LOT on the table.
I will take an educated guess and say that it would also require different camming, and probably more rpm than stock to pull the additional 55hp.
As far as expense goes...it all boils down to supply and demand, of course. If the market were saturated with aftermarket heads, then SHM wouldn't be charging much for port/polish/valve job work. These newer engines just don't have a lot of parts for them at this time, so the price for any real engine work is going to be pretty high.
That's the price you pay to be a "guinea pig".

Just my thoughts on the heads. I have posted the data on stock flow vs. ported and polished flow and I post the information on Cams that are now being reground by Crane. I don't think that you will see 55 HP from just the heads no matter who has branded them with their porting and polishing. I also think that $2400.00 is too much to pay for a ported and polished set unless someone likes to brag about being hosed. There are good deals out there for the heads and the Crane rework is a very good deal when you consider that you can now create a very good blower cam because you can choose the lobe separation angle. As for valve diameter the Lightning exhaust valve at 1.34 is a joke on a blower motor and the cams are nothing more then Mustang GT cams. I think that this next drag racing season we will see Lightnings that will be running exceptionally well. It is just too bad that many of the owners will deny any head work or cam changes.

HI!... I was the guy that was talking to RTKILLA the other night in the chat room. I'm in the process of building a 400-420H.P naturally asperated 5.4 right now using a lot od SHM's parts. Like BILLET CRANK, BILLET RODS, "RACE" FORGED PISTONS. This is with the production 5.4 cam profile. I talked to SHM for about an hour on the phone last week on ported and polished 5.4 "PI" heads. They told me with their STAGE 3 head job that they can get between 50-55H.P from the production "PI' 5.4 heads. They told me that the heads were poorly designed and they have tons of R&D in working on them to breath better. When they told me that it would cost $2500(U.S) to have this done I almost *****! See I live in CANADA! That would be like $3750(CAN) for me. I thought that price was insane. My race engine builder said he could do just about the same job as them for just under $1000CAN). That includes flowing them on a flow bench and I getting the charts. I guess when they are pretty much the only ones that do this kind of "MODULAR" work, they can set their prices as high as they want! By the way SHM built the fastest N/A modular MUSTANG in the world and pioneered the 5.4 4-valve before FORD's did. Thay also had their hand in helping FORD's design the COBRA R's engine. Hope this helps some of you guys out.

I have heard that two different companies will be coming out with heads this season for the 4.5 mod engine. No one will tell me what companies but it should be worth waiting on.

I'm not selling the heads because I don't think they helped. They did help. I just don't need them any more. I don't have exact hp numbers. I don't think it was 50 hp. With the heads and cams I think 50 hp is possible.
