Post How important is an Xpipe w/2 mufflers?

In my quest to have my 2 Dynomax mufflers installed I should of asked if an Xpipe is really needed. I notice whenever 2 mufflers are used some type of crossover is installed(H or X). I really don't know the reason. If it doesn't help in performance in any way, I am going to eliminate it & save some cash & time waiting for fabrication.

NorcalSVT,

Either one helps equalize the pressure on both sides and helps scavenge the burned exhuast out of the cylinders. It helps low end HP and torque. In one article I had read they even got a little bit of extra power on the top end.

They have been putting these on performance rides since the 60's.

I have noticed pretty big gains from a xpipe on more high horse power applications. My buddy finnaly put one on his mustang last year and gained about 12 horse power from a 650 horse power motor.

So I guess it would be a good idea to have one installed before the mufflers?
I just didn't like the fact that all these shops act as if it's hard to do. The shop I made an appointment with said I would need to leave the L all day so he can make the x pipe. I just hope his estimate isn't an hourly rate.

Thanks

All day, I don't think so. Does dynomax make one, cause my bassani exhaust came with one and maybe that would fit it? Couldn't hurt to try and look.

Just have them weld a short 2 1/2" pipe in front of the mufflers to connect the two pipes at their closest point. If they can't handle that in short order you need to take it somewhere else.

Make sure they cut big enough holes in the sides of your exhaust pipes to allow good flow between the two.

Also make sure they cut a C shape in the H pipe on end so it wraps around the hole instead of going in it and blocking flow.

from what I gather (from mustang owners), a h-pipe isnt as godd as a true x-pipe. The flow with a x-pipe is more smooth. Depends on how much moola it costs to do, >$150 I would, if more I would hetitate, based on power/$ ratio.
