What are some suggestions for an alarm system for my 2001 L?

Thumbs up

Horse9 I also have order a 2001 and I think it comes with an alarm. I order a device that hooks to the brake and makes it almost imposible to take the L. I found it at www.AutoBarn.com....its called AutoLock PRO. Even thow it is cheap (59.95) it seems like good insurance to keep thiefs from ripping off your truck. Ill just use it in areas where the L is going to be sitting for awhile or places im not comfortable with. You cant get this thing off your brake and its easy to put on. I hope none of us ever get ripped off! :-)

Hi Mark,

This sounds like an inexpensive way of keeping out L's from the jealous. You said it comes with an alarm - do you mean the "anti theft device" that constantly flashes on the dash?
thanks

If nothing changes for 2001(from 1999&2000), than an easy and inexpensive alarm solution is at your local Ford dealer.
Since our lightnings already have "keyless entry", we simply need to add the "System 3 upgrade" part #F3AZ-19A361-D(about $90(no shock sensor(part #F3AZ-19A361-F)about $30 or siren(uses horn)) or "System 4 upgrade" (part #F3AZ-19A361-C)about $140(includes shock sensor and siren).
These use the original remotes,RAP Module, door switches,etc.. and turns it into a complete alarm(stater kill, lights flashing, chirps or honk(can be silenced, etc...). This is what the dealer tries to sell you for $400-$600. Obviously they don't tell you this is what they do.
Instructions are great, tells color of wires and where located. Takes about 1 hour to install. The dealer will install(1 hour labor) it if your not handy with tools and a DVM. I've installed one. It's covered by Ford for 12mnth/12Kmiles or the remainder of new vehicle warrenty (whichever is longer!)
I hope this helps, I'm sure I just pissed off some "accessory salesmen".

2KWITELITN,

Thanks for the info., I would have never thought of that. This should do the trick.

Take care,

Factory anti-theft is pretty much fool-proof. Unless the thief is packing a laptop, a chip burner, and is a "tuner", chances of defeating the factory system is almost nil. Still, I've installed an alpine system in mine with radar. Attracts more atention than I would like with the perimeter warning, but haven't had any new scratches on the paint from some skank rubbing up to my truck.
I also don't fancy the idea of replacing the side or rear window if someone tries getting in. I don't know how much they cost, nor do I want to know, so I feel safe investing the bucks now in the alarm system. (Sleep better at night as well)

Cheers

Better yet........

When I sat down with the financing guy I said, "I want you to throw in an alarm". He didn't bat an eye. "No problem" he said. They threw in the System 4 upgrade. It probably cost the dealer $50.00.

Ah the autolock, ive seen the infomercial, the "thief" recently out of prison with the hacksaw not able to cut through the autolock, and yanking on it not popping it off. This is all true, very strong part of your car. However this "thief" should have turned his hack-saw and attention to the stick that holds the pedal, cut through that in liek 5 seconds, I think I could drive a stump

Nathan is right, I had the Lo-Jack system installed, along with an alarm (not sure which, it was installed at the same time by the same guy, all arranged at the dealer). I now have 3 layers of protection, along with the Autolock bar for the brake.

This may be viewed as overkill, but I live 300 miles from the Mexican border and am taking every precaution that I can. Even at at that, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it. My aim is just to make it as difficult as possible so they have to work at stealing my baby.

I also take particular care with how and where I park her. I will usually park head-in, in a well lit area, next to a curb and cut the wheels so that a tow truck can't just drag her away easily. I also set the parking brake so they can't drag her from the front or pull her up on a flat bed as easily. Anything I can do that will delay them even for couple of seconds, I will do.

That extra couple of seconds may mean my being able to get off a shot or two before they get away. .45 caliber is good medicine for this ailment.
