Talking MM&FF Lightning

Just for info......

The Jan. 2001 edition of MM&FF shows them putting on a full Bassani exhaust.

They did 4 base runs and turned out 360 HP and 419 lbs.-ft of torque, they had a Superchips chip and a Cervinis functional ram-air hood, useless to the dyno.

When they finished WITH THE EXHAUST, they did another dyno and came up with 373 HP and 445 lbs.-ft of torque (13 HP and 26 lbs. torque gain) FROM THE EXHAUST ALONE.

THE PRO-M COULD NOT BE USED BECAUSE OF THE RAM-AIR SETUP, AND USED THE ORIGINAL MAF.

SORRY FOR ANY CONFUSION..

Was that a 00 or 01 L? I find it hard to believe the 360 rwhp on an 00. Don't most come out near 330 rwhp. The torque numbers seem high too. I wonder if they published the 'ole spike numbers for more mag sales. Maybe their L has got the super secret new Eaton sneaked under the hood.

I don't find 360 hp with a chip and air set-up, that far fetched, mine made 357hp and 430 lb-ft with an airaid and Inject-Tech chip.

P.S. it is a 99.

Question

Interesting comment about their having to remove the Mass Air sensor because it didn't fit with the ram air setup. Their numbers seem a bit high also. They were attained without a MAF?, highly unlikely. Slicks and VHT on the dyno rollers maybe?

I like the headers with the exception of having to cut 1/2" of threaded material off the shock so it doesn't impale the header pipe. Anyone with these headers have to do the same? I think this would have been mentioned perviously.

At least they are giving our rides coverage.

Speedin Bob,
I have installed the Bassani headers on two trucks and you only have to cut the top off the shock if you install the right hand header before the left one. The reason you cut that off is so when you tilt the engine to get the left header in, if the rh header is already installed the rh header will tilt with the engine and bind against the shock stud. What I did was, jacked the engine up, installed the left header, set it back down, reinstalled the motor mount bolt, and installed the right header. It worked fine, no cutting or grinding. Hope it helps.

PFA-

No offense, but I find the wording of your post a little confusing....

The way I interpreted the article was that this is a project Lightning for MM&FF. The 360 HP was for a chip and filter unit similar to the PSP full meal deal, and a new mass air aka Pro-M.

The next month, they added the Cervini's Ram Air, which required going back to the orginal mass air. The original mass air, plus the additional filter area provided by the larger filters in the hood netted 13 hp on the dyno. (Better air flow)

Their comment about the ram air being useless on the dyno.... The ram air contributions cannot be measured on the dyno since the truck is not moving and forcing air into the hood and intake.... Sothey couldn't determine gains for the ram air on the dyno...

Question

Wow. I can't believe none of you remember that the exhaust was not STOCK. MM&FF did an article on installing a BORLA muffler and tailpipes just a couple of issues ago.
Guess those 360 horsepower figures were not a TRUE STOCK exhaust comparison!!!!!
Notice the very slick camera work in the January 2001 issue, they actually never show the muffler and tailpipes on the truck that are supposedly stock!! So how are you gonna believe the hp and torque figures???
Haha is all I got to say!!
Later and happy turkey day!!
Ryan

If I remember correctly, they did not gain any, or VERY little power from the other muffler they put on...???
