Angry innercooler leaking

Ok, it's my turn...21,000 miles and I have lost two inches of coolant in the last two days. What all do I need to make sure gets changed along with the cooler? What is going to be different about the next cooler? Is it going to go out in the next 10,000 to 20,000 miles (after warranty)? I'm not a happy camper!!!

Jerry,

I am in the same boat as you right now. I have the same questions as you for I had the dealer to the dye test and noticed it pretty much empited itself. No reason to use a black light. OBTW, I have 13,000 miles and dont beat on my truck. Oh sure, a couple WOT runs a day won't hurt but sheesh.

I did mark the resevior with a fine tip sharpie then topped it off with water only as it is not cold here yet and I dont want any more coolant coursing through improper areas of my engine block.

Just to be safe, I am going to demand they replace all four O2 sensors along with the intercooler.

The skinny is to wait a bit as the "fix" is supposed to alleviate this achilles heel.

Keep me posted.

Hey Jerry, me too! Where do you plan on taking yours for repair? Maby we can go together and bring some printed copies of the related posts on this board. When I talked to Covert they acted like mine was the first leak they heard of. Let me know something soon, I have been leaking for about 3000mi now.
Oh yeah, did you see me on FM2243 about three weeks ago? I know it had to be you. I was in my U.P.S. truck waving my arm out the door. If it was someone else I guess they must have thought I was nuts or somehting. Later!

Hey Guys!
Don't wait get it fixed NOW. The current fix is to replace with the same design, that is all that is available right now. Call the Ford SVT Hotline they will give you the latest story. The problem is not in how you drive your Lightning, it is a part issue. These things could be driven by little old ladies and only to church on Sundays and they will fail. It is still a cool vehicle and the flag ship of the Ford performance fleet and they will make it right it is just going to take some time.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the info guy's!
Travis, I saw you hanging out of your truck and I knew who it was. I'm going to talk to Dreager this week. I will let you know.
Ba, I guess all I can do is go with the temp. fix! Does anybody have any idea what % of the coolers have failed (or will fail) 100 %?

Thanks again, Jerry

Mine started leaking at around 11K, repaired by 14K. I have now over 25K on the beast without any problems. It took some time to actually recieve the replacement parts. So be sure to notify your dealership, luckily mine was a very small leak, I was able to drive my L until the parts arrived. Oh....by the way, I was running mainly water when I discovered the leak.

I wouldn't wait too long, no motor likes to Suck down Antifreeze.....IMO

And Like Speedin' Bob said,Have them change the O2's.....

What kind of sight gauge is there for the intercooler, and where is it located? I took a brief look last night with little time to linger, and did not notice an obvious place to check fluid level.

Thanks

Sandy, just look at the side of the plastic reservoir. There is a "full-cold" line.

Thanks Jerry:

In the old days I had my engine analyzer, timing lights, valve adjustment tools, etc., and did lots of mechanical work. Nowadays I don't even know where to find the spark plugs on the beast. I didn't realize there was an actual reservoir type filler mechanism for the intercooler. I'm almost afraid to look.

I see mine is going down about 1 inch a week 11000 miles. I wonder when the big fix is due to arrive.

Jerry
Just to put your mind at ease.....
I am anxiously awaiting the five o'clock bell at work because I will be leaving to go pick up my L from the dealer after having the intercooler replaced. They are going to have me talk to their lead SVT tech when I get there and he is going to explain every single thing that was done to my L. Expect about a week turnaround because of parts. The dealer that I use here in Cincinnati was very sensitive to my concerns about my truck and have reassured me that everything will be as good as new and I have also talked to some other L owners that have had their intercoolers replaced and no problems!
When I get home from the dealer I will post another reply for you guys and give every little detail!

Thanks
Boomshlok
