Finally took my truck in for the intercooler replacement. I think they finally have all the parts. Took my trophys too. Told'em to be careful test driving it because there was a chip installed in it. The head mechanic say "Noel, please don't put nitruos on your truck, please don't put nitrous on your truck. I'm not gonna work on it if you put nitrous on your truck. I looked at him and smiled.
Did you check all the nitrous post in the NEW FAQ?

Not yet. He just figures since I've put on a MAF, filter, and a chip that nitrous is next.

NOS, NX, Edelbrok(spell?) are all trying to come up with kits but have yet to see one. They are saying that the kit will come with 150 shots. But that is too much. 75, 100, or a 125 (pushing it) is what you need. People with Nitrous kits have moddifyed mustang 5.0 kits or custom kit. 1BADTK has a custom wet kit witha 75 shot, turning 12.3's. We are running a dry 100 shot kit from NOS that have only produced one 12 second run. This partually due tot he fast we have so much extra weight, and one of the weaker L's stock. We are about to convert to a wet system. If you are looking for Nitrous info check out the FAQ and this link: http://nloc.org/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000049.html

Question

Tommy,
I know this has been covered here before(call me lazy for not checking the faq) but how much n2o can these bad boyz really take,if any at all? How much of a danger does it pose, even in small doses?
What kindda of gain can one expect in 1/4 times w/ a chip/filter/and Nitrous working together?
I guess I just wanna know if it's worth the risk. So is it?

I am also in the process of buying a nitrous kit for my L and have did a lot of research on adding nitrous. I have talked with all the manufactures and several Lightning owners in order to make the decision to add nitrous or not. I must say that after understanding more about nitrous I must say that it is 100% safe to run nitrous on our L's. Our motor is probably the strongest built factory motor ever. Since we have forged crank and pistons, the additional cylinder pressure will not harm our motors. The biggest shot that is recommend on our L's is 125hp shot(dry) 150(wet). What I have found out about nitrous is that most people who have problems with nitrous don't install it properly. Our trucks are unique in that they run so rich from the factory that we can install a 125hp (dry) shot of nitrous without having to upgrade the fuel system. The reason why most people hurt their motor with nitrous is because they end up leaning out their motor by not upgrading their fuel system. Almost all factory motors do not run rich enough to run nitrous without upgrading the fuel system. This why were are fortunate that are L's run rich.
I am going to purchase the 5115 kit from NOS. This is actually a kit for the EFI Mustang's but it will work on our L's. Also with this kit it is necessary to buy a Fuel pressure cut off switch( this is a safety device that cuts the nitrous off if the fuel pressure drops). Also a bottle heater is a must. This will keep the nitrous bottle at the correct psi for maximum flow. If your nitrous bottle gets to cold and you use it, it could possibly harm your engine. Also if you don't want to have to turn your bottle on manually you can get NOS's remote bottle opener. Finally you will need to buy several jets from NOS depending on which HP shot you decide to run. The 5115 kit comes with the 75 HP jet. Nos told me that this kit was making close to 100 hp on the L's do to the extra cooling effect the nitrous had on the supercharger. Hope this helps!

Hankfan,
thanks for all the info, I wasn't seriously considering nitrous until reading your post. What does the 5115 cost, including everything?
Thanks in advance.

A cold nitrous bottle will not hurt the motor. I'm sorry, I have run this stuff for awhile now on my '96 Cobra, and have researched it for a long time. A cold bottle means nitrous pressure will be lower than normal. What this means, is that less nitrous will be injected and you'll actually just run a bit rich.

If the bottle pressure gets too HIGH, then you run the risk of a lean condition, or having a solenoid stick open.

FWIW, the 5115 kit costs ~$475 from Summit.

It's a dry kit. Realize that there is a 5115-1 (Stage 1) and 5115-2 (Stage 2) kit.

The difference is basically that in the -2 kit you get an inline fuel pump. This is necessary when bumping up the shot on a pretty stock Mustang (which is what this kit was originally designed for), but from what I've been told by several here, you do NOT need the inline pump when using it on an L. I guess we have a pretty big pump in the tank from the factory. Large injectors like we have are great, but are worthless if the fuel supply to them isn't there. I know the factory Mustang pumps are tiny, but like I said people are running the Stage 1 kit (which will save you ~$200) and then just buying seperate jets (which are cheap) to increase the nitrous shot.

I have plenty of data on recommended jetting from NOS, if you're interested.

Ralleyone,

Matt Here. If you still doubt the nitrous application and are concerned about it hurting your engine, you should give Nitrous Oxide Systems (NOS) a call. Ask to speak to Lloyd. He is like their Ford “Freak”.

They have two trucks out in California that are using their systems and are acting in the capacity of like test trucks. One of the truck was using Sixty (60) bottles of nitrous a month. Yes 60 bottles a month. That’s 2 bottles a day. And they have had no problems at all!

Just a little note for thought.

The 5115 kit on my truck works excellent and I have had no problems at all. It is imperative to make sure you dyno your truck and get the air/fuel mixture a little on the rich side, and make sure it’s not running lean.

Good luck & Happy Spraying,

Matt

FSUFAN, how long did it take you to install the kit? Was the wiring diffucult? Also did you ever dyno your L with the 75hp jet that comes with the kit?

Thanks, HANKFAN
