got clunk?
Went to the dealer today and spent all day waiting. I took the picture above with me. First the front end guy has no clue whats going on says he doesn't hear any thing and he doesn't under stand what I'm talking about so I show him the pics and draw him a map. Well I set and wait the Owner(who has a white L) see me and he also has same problem on his he goes and gets Service Man.and tells him to take care me. So I explain that SVT is aware of the fix and his spend some time with them on phone. They move my truck back to the front end guy what calls SVT and they've gone home.So my truck doesn't get fixed what a bunch of BS.

00Blackie:
Lubing wheel stops merely eliminates an awful cracking sound that can occur when at full crank on the wheel and some jounce of the wheel (grinding on the stops).
(Excellent Photo's -- great service to us all -- thanks -- your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to snap some pix of slappy pistons)

Had the L up on the rack for exhaust work today and guess what I found. The infamous moving bolt.
It wasn't there at 800 miles but at 1450 it is. This is a 2000 that I got in May. It will be in the shop first thing Thursday morning.

Ours has the sliding bolt also. I've showed this thread to the Service Manager at the Ford dealership where I work and he's showing great interest in repairing this problem. I have to think this could become a safety issue if left untreated. Wouldn't this weaken the bolt and eventually cause it to shear off?
clonetek, great pics you've posted. Would love to see some pics of the fix.

Hey Super Chicken,
I took my '99 into Sunset for the same thing less than a month ago. I never heard the infamous clunk, but it pulled to the right enough to bring it in before 12 mos was up.
Tech notes are as follows:
"ROAD TEST CHECK CAMBOR CASTOR AND TOE IN NEC TO INSTALL ECCENTRIC BOLT AND WASHERS AT UPPER CONTROL ARM AND SET CAMBER CASTOR AND TOE IN"
Parts used:
FMC F65Z 38236 BB CAM & BOLT ASY-FRT SU Qty 4
FMC F65Z 3C178 AA CAM FRT SUSP UPR ARM Qty 4
Can't swear that fixed the control arm bolt movement - they didn't even re-paint the bolt so's you could tell if it still moves, so I painted it myself. Haven't put enough miles on it to see any movement, but it does run straight as an arrow now.
Let me know if I can provide any more info on my "repair". Either way, I'd like to hear how things go for you. Good luck!

Sunset Ford. Westminster ***** the Whale and the real sad part of it is I drive by 2 other dealership to go there. One of the other dealerships has real bad parking I know they'll fix any damage but I just don't want to go thur it.(McCoy Ford)And the other one won't give the correct answer about anything and they won't fix some shipping damage ended up have to write all the way to Dearborn. So I just don't spend any money there(in warr.or sales)

Shocker - I bought my 00'L at Sunset Ford. Who should I talk to about this problem there. I have no clunk, but my truck definitely pulls to the right. The day I bought the truck, I looked under it and noticed the black gooey paint around the bolt was messed up.
Actually some photos of the steering stops would make this the complete "clunk" post for referencing.

BACK2FORD -
The Service Writer was Mario Acosta. He was not aware of the problem, but he wrote it up for the Tech to check "for possible TSB repair".
Tech was Matt Foster, never saw/talked to him, just got the name off the invoice.
Real interested to see if Super Chicken gets any satisfaction now that Mike (Sunset and L owner) is aware and has the problem. He's a good guy and let me test drive his L when I was waiting for mine.

Shocker
Thanks for the info, talked to SVT, Clinton and he stated that the Tech just needs to get a star washer that fits the bolt, and if they can't handle that maybe I should take my L to another dealer. Dealership just call and stated that they had to order the star washer because they don't have any that size. Maybe Friday. Don't know what to think here???????? maybe just put me off or that.

I have mentioned this several times before, but I got my "clunk" noise fixed by having the control arms replaced. Seemed to fix all problems (clunk, pulling, lane hunting, etc.) Part numbers are XL3Z-3078-BA and XL3Z-3079-BA.
I have no idea if the lower control arms part numbers are identified by a stamped number or whatever. But these are the lower control arms specified by the SVT tech hotline.
