got clunk?

Exclamation got clunk?

okay.. the "clunk" is coming from the bolt on the drivers side lower control arm. (the one beside the oil filter) is this the only bolt that needs to be fixed?


also, what the heck is that black gunk on the frame? thought it was paint at first, but i dont know what it is.. anyone else have it on their truck?

Thanks for the pics clonetek. Now I know exactly where/what to look for. I think the black goop is a rust inhibitor they put on.

Great Shots - Now the mechanically challenged among us can see the problem.

Say how about a picture of the tie rod stops that need lubed for a complete clunk pictorial ?

another thing.. since both sides are sliding, do i need to put a star washer on both sides??



silver 2000--- pics of the tie rod stops? sure thing.. lets see if i can find them.. lol

Had mine in for that today. It looks exactly like mine. Clunk was caused by lower end of spring being out of saddle in lower control arm.

I made the mechanic find the part numbers which are stamped and paper taped on lower arms to verify they were SVT. When he was taking apart the ball joints to lower the lower arm and take the pressure off the spring (Yea I stood over him the whole time) we saw a green paper sticker on the top of the arm that said SVT. Well he repositioned the spring and put it back together and that clunk is gone. If your spring is out of the saddle and you have the car on a lift it's really easy to tell because part of it will probably be right up against the shock. This will now be referred to as FRONT END CLUNK NUMBER 4.
I went in to see my service writer and said I want this fixed right now. "Go around and see Jeff and see what hes working on". No
Gordon we will go around and see Jeff." We go and see Jeff (Front end guy). me "Hi Jeff, what are you doing?" "I'm about to align this F-150." me "No your not. Back this piece of S@#& out of here your gonna fix my Lightning." Jeff "OK" Lightning got fixed. Good news. The brake pads on my truck which has 18256 miles on it are only 1/3 used up. (Most of my miles are highway avg 80-100 a day when I drive it). That equates to a brake job for me around 50-60000 which is reasonable. At 60000 my 93 L had three brake jobs. Well off to the track on Sunday...after Church of course.

PS on my lower control arm bolt that was sliding and looked just like the picture he said the sliding doesn't affect the alignment which is done on the upper arms and all we did was he got on one wrench and I got on another and we tighten the hell out of it to Noels torque specs which is as tight as you can get it. Lubed wheel stops.

How can they say that it doesn't affect the alignment if the bottom of your wheel moves outwards almost a 1/4 inch. My wheel leans in at the top and that has to wear the inside of the tire faster than the outside. I'm not a front end guy but come on!

What does greasing the wheel stops do? What symtom will this fix?

00Blacklightning: The wheel stops rub metal to metal when turning, most noticable while backing up making a sharp right turn. It makes the "clunk" sound whereas the bolt moving makes the "skreek" sound. I greased mine the other day because of "clunk" and I had told the muffler guy to tack the washer to the frame at 4 points when my Flows were installed. I looked to see if it had been holding...the dingdong had tacked the washer to the nut instead of the washer to the frame.
