Charles, I am making 495 RWHP with a 8# lower and stage 2 cams with my MP. I put the Crower springs in. Are they stiff enough? Also is the spring compressor tool the same as the Ford special tool made by Rotunda?

The Crower's are 80# springs. I used Manley springs, which are 95#. The 80#'s begin to float at 4700 and the 95#'s started at that point to make more power as the engine spools up to redline. Running 17# boost the difference was about 12hp but at 20# boost the gain was more like 25 to 30hp. Not bad for a couple hundred bucks and a few hours work! I am sure the guys with stock heads and running 20-psi boost with the Mag are floating their valves like crazy and losing a lot of power. When running 20-psi boost you can see when the stock valves springs begin to float as the curve makes an abrupt “kink” and then starts off on a different slope as a new phenomena enters the picture. You can see that very distinctly in Rob’s dyno pulls.

The Ford tool also fits under the cam but you have to hold the spring compressed by holding the tool with one hand and then try and fish the clips out, replace the springs and somehow get the clips back in with the other. The tool I designed turns and then locks in the down position so you can replace the springs with both hands and even take a break if needed. I took one look at the Ford tool and decided I might decide to end-it-all if I went that route so instead I designed some tools that work and hopefully made a L project more enjoyable.

If you are interested in upgrading your springs give me a call at 503-357-5444 or email me at: charles_warner@mindspring.com. I have several spring compressor tools and retainer clip tools available and can loan them to anyone who wants to upgrade their valve springs and I can also advise on spring selection.

Hi Charles, hopefully after the holidays ill be able to get to Sals and see what my increased spring pressure resulted. The truck has been up and running great for the past couple months ,just been mine and Sals schedule has been real busy but we got to talkin on the phone the other day and things are looking up to get er on the dynojet.

When I saw this post I was like hmm this seems familiar, it is
this post started back in Sept. Isn't it amazing on how far the Mags come from even then I was this post, many of us were this post,
meaning we bought a Mag and after dynoing it felt it wasnt the increase in power we'd hoped for. So Charles went out there and did some massive testing, and what he found out is SPRINGS ARE EVERYTHING WHEN RUNNING A MAG. (yes I am calling the kettle black) did I listen noooooooooooooo
@#%$)@#*&^@)#%*&^#@%)*&^@#)%

BUT
Look where we've come since then
Gator running back to back 10's FULL WEIGHT
Top Gun (Jim) out there running mid low 11's like it's nothing
and me just this week putting down OVER 600 MAGNUM POWERED HP with a mere 14 degrees of timing and only a 8lb Lower Pulley.

Bottom line is there is HP to be had on a stock motor, but for the people building a built motor this Magnum is now what the KB's were just a couple of years back. For 2006 we will have MANY 600HP and better Mags out there.
Like any new comer it takes time to dial it in, THAT HAS NOW BEEN DONE.

THE YEAR OF THE MAG HAS ARRIVED!!

Amen to that! Will be testing some theories in the Spring, running a bracket schedule thru the summer, and going for some impressive #s next fall. So far I am very pleased with the MP Blower.

ah, my old post, on a side note never posted my track results with this setup of 420hp and 500 tq.

date was 8 oct 2005, track was 1000' temps were 57 degrees, bp was 29.92 and humdity was 57%
60'.......2.06
330'......5.473
1/8......8.278
MPH.....87.20
1000'....10.717
1/4.......12.778
MPH......109.48

this was on my 15 degree tune and I had to feather the gas out of the gate ALOT, I spun alot, on stock tires, and in the 1-2 shift for a good 20-30 feet. If I had some slicks and can gag it out of the hole. I'm sure I would get low low 12s if not 11's, I know I didn't have the MPH on it now for 11's , but I never was able to full power it out of the hole either.

I say it all the time but UNTIL you can FLOOR IT from the line and stay WOT the entire run you truly DO NOT know what your capable of running.
SO under the conditions you just mentioned, YOU DID AWESOME

For those interested in the correct springs to use on the Mag,
I would strongly reccommend talking to Charles and Jim
My guess is the weak factory springs in mine is what cause the valve to chip
and also played a part on why I continued to melt plugs,
(opening at the wrong time, and sending heat to the plugs when not firing)

Charles had giving me some good info on the Springs but as you know we
never found the time to do them, hopefully others will learn from my mistakes
Here's that info:

There are some strong springs offered by Endura-Tech. Check out:
http://www.endura-tech.com/valve_spring.htm

Check out PN# MGT-2V-B2, they have 112#'s on the seat. To my knowledge that is more pressure then any available spring that will fit our trucks and a good one for stock head L's and also for ported and cammed L's until Jim's new springs become available. Until then this is the spring for serious Mag owners who wants great track times this next season. If you want you are free to spread that PN around your friends who are serious Mag owners.

Charles

The new Springs Charles speaks of are something Jim of JDM is currently developing and having built exclusive for JDM, (I will be switching to them this spring amof)

If there is one thing I learned through all this, it's that something a lot of us (including builders) really never paid much attention to MEANS EVERYTHING, --> Valve Springs

Jim HAS paid attention to the springs, and Gators multi 10 sec passes at full weight, me putting down over 600 HP, Top Guns ET's still to come, and tons of other JDM Mag's are proff IT MATTERS, anyone with a Mag could benefit GREATLY talking to Jim or Charles

Great article here on Endura-Tech and some testing a Winston Cup team did
