Didnt we decide that not all our trucks have a forged crank? I remember a very long thread from not too long ago about this...

All Lightning came with steel cranks.....however Ford was selling cast cranks from their parts department when you'd walk in to buy one, asking for a Lightning crank.

SAME CRANK AS IN MY JDM BUILT ENGINE

It's a very strong crank. FORD actually did something right on these trucks. Here's a pic a a forged steel crank out of a 5.4.

Same crank as in my JDM built engine

I think they do even better! 514RWHP without a problem. That's gotta be pretty damn close to 600HP at the flywheel. Not bad if you ask me. -Mat-

Hey Suavy,

Don't take my question the wrong way - I mean no offence, but I am curious.

I know that you point here is to defend Ford (and SVT) that the motor performs within the expected power window, but....

Why did Ford (and SVT) see fit to put Manley rods in the Cobra and claim the bottom end could support up to 800 HP, if it was designed with only 390 HP?

I would think that the same logic should have been applied to the full line of SVT offerings from Ford - including the Lightning. This would be especially expected in our trucks due to the weight and torque factors.

I'm not trying to rile you in any way, as I sincerely respect you - but, what are your thoughts on this dichotomy as a Ford employee?

Herb, no worries!

I know I ask my self some times why we do what we do.

I think the wear and tear on the lightning motor's helped Ford make those type of decisions.

I can honestly say I can't answer that question.

When I talked to SVT on the phone after I blew my engine, they said the reasoning for the Manley rods in the Cobra was that it was spinning up to 7k and the standard rods couldn't take it.

It's not like they don't void warranties on Cobras too.
