Question Lightning engine in a 98 4x4

I'm probably crazy for asking this, and somebody on here has probably asked this before, but, what are the chances of this working? It should just bolt in, no? The stock e4od most likely would take some punishment unless I install the L valve body. Would the t-case be able to handle it? Can the ecu be reprogrammed or would that have to be replaced?

I just started researching so I really don't no any of the specifics. But this would be a cool conversion.

If anybody has a link to someone actually doing this that would also help alot.

My flareside also weighs in at 4600 too, very close to the L.

Good to know.

I thought it was the e4 with the 4r valve body.

Shane, the 4R100 IS an E4OD .

It would work, lots of people do Lightning conversions to regular F-150s. I have a 99 ext cab in my shop right now I'm finishing up putting a Lightning crate motor and monster box in.

What are the L crate motors going for? My plan was, by fluke of luck, find one used from a wrecked L or Harley that's been parted. Very unlikely around here I'm guessing.

I'd like to do this in my wife's Expedition. It already looks the part with the L front bumper cover, wheels and low-profile (not stock) running boards.

I even have the diesel 4R100 trans in our Expy.

My problem is things like the air suspension. The L computer won't operate that.

I'd be real interested on swap info.

you don't need the computer just a chip or programmer that has been tuned for the injector maf etc.... Sal does a great job with the Xcalibrator so you can do some minor tweaking.

Thanks brahmus.

That's the other option I thought might work. Just use the stock Expedition PCM and modify the appropriate engine management and transmission tables in it.

Makes sense.

This would be a very cool mod, I think. My wife is in love with this SUV. She is not a "car person" at all...although she's great b/c she lets me have plenty of toys. But, for whatever reason, she really likes this Expedition. We've had it 5 years, it's been a great vehicle as far as reliability goes, it looks cool with all the L hardware, and it is a good family hauler.

I have asked her if she wanted something more "high end" and her response was "no way. I don't want to have to worry about the kids accidentally spilling something in a $60k vehicle." My response was/is, "what are they doing with something they can spill anyway."

But if I could figure out how to get an L-motor swap into this hulk of a vehicle, it'd be pretty darn cool. Get it tuned about like mine (very mild) and see what 390+rwhp/480+rwtq would do in a 6000lb SUV. I'm thinking mid-14s. ? Might need more gearing. It has 3.55s, but the tires are 285/55-18, so they are 30+" tall.

But it would be enough to make it fun, and scare the crap out of rice burners.

That was my goal when i burn them from a light in a 6000+lb 4x4 with 38" tires the look is priceless. another option would be to just slap the blower/intake etc on to a N/A 5.4. several have done this and it seems to hold up will at factory boost levels and makes for a cheap upgrade. ofcourse if you do have the 5.4 and it has been a hauler for 5 years it may have to many miles to feel comfortable doing this. shop around you can find an OEM takeout motor fairly easily since everyone wants a built bottom end.... but you know this already... the blower assemblies can be picked up on e-bay for about $1400 or so. Best mod i've ever done and not all that difficult either.
