Roll Cage Question (Vinnie, Jim, and the rest)
Roll Cage Question (Vinnie, Jim, and the rest)
First question. Is it race legal to have a swing arm this year in comp. (does it have to be fully welded in)
Second question. Has anyone tested whether or not in a roll over on the street if not having a swing arm in position would the cage hold up AS good. (not good with a rear impact moving forward to the windshield)This could have been a dumb question but I have seen a roll over on a regular truck with a roll bar hoop in the bed and work fine. I was just wondering what everyone thought knowing most you with roll cages do not run the street with a swing arm in place.

Yes, swingouts are legal.
As far as safety is concerned.. While the side bar MAY give you some additional bracing, it's main purpose is to protect the driver from a side impact.
It is not requirred for forward or lateral support...thats what the cross brace and rear braces are for, which those cannot be removable.
BTW, if you are talking about a rollcage it consists of additional roof bars and front supports aswell as a sill bar,but I think you are talking about a legal 10 second roll bar here!

Swingouts are legal provided they are constructed in a manner approved by the rulebook. There are specific ways they must be attached.
I couldn't see any roll bar being as safe without the side bars. While the side bars do give support to the main hoop, the MAIN function of the side bar is to keep you in the vehicle if the door opens on impact.
For what it's worth, my side bars are permanently welded in, and I get in and out of my truck WAY faster than someone with swing outs.

Sorry to all that have to read this now I appoligize for the pissing contest thread. I just wanted idea s to either weld in or have swing outs. I would like to have the comfort of a stock cab in traffic and a bar while racing. I know vinnie has a swing out and I liked the idea of the comfort of his but just wanted the thoughts of safety without it on the street if there was a roll over.
I'm not playing this retarted game with you again Jamie. End of story.
If anyone has real questions, I am always happy to help.
1fst54, personally I would not drive around with the side bars removed. Our chassis flex a lot, and there is always a chance you won't get them to fit back in (NHRA legal double pin/bolt style) if you do a lot of driving with them out. To answer your roll over question, just the 4 point would most likely stop the cab from collapsing, but you'd still be much safer with the side bars in place.

Actually "side bars" are not requirred only ONE drivers side bar is requirred for a roll bar!
If the purpose was for support of the main hoop, then we would be talking about two side bars being requirred and they are not!
BTW Sal, I seem to remember a post saying that forward facing support bars were a ridiculous joke and any forward of the main hoop is only as strong as the weld and is dangerous...now you are saying they are functional??

I personally don't think your opinion is worth a whole lot here...

As far as you're concerned your only purpose here is for the rest of us to point and laugh at how much of a twit you are.
You could have all the answers and I wouldn't listen to you because you're a ****ING TOOL.

Actually I started replying to the post right after it was created. I took a phone call as I was writing it, so when I submitted it, it was after you posted, which I obviously didn't see. Not that I care what you write, but if you are going to make stuff up (like I posted to "one up" you, at least be right about it.

I hate to feed this thread. But where do Vinnies bars rotate. I can see the top pin area but no hinge area? Looks good I bet they dont stay plain black long.

the bars swing out towards you as if you were getting in the truck. They pivot from the floor. Ive seen some swing downwards. The ones we have done by our guy are really nice...pricey...but really nice. We also make the custom back window. Here are some more pics...
