Cab shell help needed.
Martman03 with all the accessories that you put on your truck, you should have just bought your boss, oh sorry your wife, some nice bling to hang around her neck. Odds are if she really is a woman she would have literally taken the bait and you would have not started this dare I say assinine thread. People should not ride in the back of the truck, especially kids. Didn't you ever see Toy Story?

yes, yes you are
j/k its still legal in florida...but I think the rule is they have to stay below the top edge of the bed...they cant stand or sit in a chair....not that people listen or anything thoughIf you need space why don’t you just get a trailer and have the GT tow it... they can tow if needed to...just not for long periods of time with a lot of weight...they don’t have the extra cooling features the towing packages supply...supposedly
Mart Man my Brother, Problem easily solved (in one of two ways)
ONE Dump the Wife and keep the kids (I did that)
or Two buy a full size old fashion bench seat and find a way to mount it in there for those special ocasions ONLY,
Schitt the Hillbillys have been putting 4 in a front seat for years

There is a company that makes a cool cap that has no front windows. A friend of mine is a dealer but I forget the name of the company who makes the cap. Instead of having the sliding window on the truck and another one on the cap, it has a rubber boot that butts up against the cab. Very nice setup on his Dodge. If you are interested, post here or email me and I will find out the name of the manufacturer.
Thanks for the input guys. And to all of you that are flaming me over the kid riding in the back, what's your friggin problem. Some of the fondest memories I and my wife both have is the days when we traveled with our families in the pick-up. We used to love taking the truck so we could ride in the back. We've become a country that's lost most of it's freedoms when it comes to being on the roads. Damn states too busy trying to protect us from ourselves. The wife and I both rode many miles in the back of our families trucks with no camper shell or seat and belt, and we're both still here. You know what, people die in accidents, and some from being thrown from the bed of a truck. People also die from falling down in bathtubs and drowning. I'm not going to make my kids stop taking baths so it doesn't happen to them.
I'm not trying to start a war here, it's my kids that said they'd like to ride in the back of the truck with the dog. Sounds like the same thing I liked to do when I was a kid. I'm just trying to make sure that I keep the environment as safe as possible if I do let them ride out back.

I hear you on riding in the back of the truck. I too use to ride in the back of my dad’s truck as a kid, LOVED IT! I remember when we had that Brady Bunch station wagon with the seat in the back, that was cool my middle brother would make faces at the cars driving behind us, funny as hell…
Anyway, if you do put someone back there other then a dog or mother-in-law it’s a good idea to have a seat with seat belt.

In Tennessee it is legal to carry children in the bed of a pick up truck. I prefer to stick my wife in the back though. That way I don't have to listen to her. I think an aluminum lightweight shell is your best choice. They are light weight for quick acceleration. They are available with racks to carry ladders, lumber, road kill and just regular game. Mine have side doors so cargo is accessible.

Initially I was going to just let this go, but it seems like you are serious about doing this. Just ask yourself this, how much do you value a loved ones life? Pickup beds are great for dogs and hauling crap, and if you've got a bedrug they make a great place to practice making babies. No doubt you will get upset at this, however if it prevents you from actually putting your kids in the back, well then I can live with that. Good luck, now go sell some cars.

So your point is since our parents were stupid enough to allow us to ride we should be too. When people use the argument, well you could die crossing the street too, shows just how little we think of others. Dieing in the tub, crossing the street whatever are things out of our control. Choosing to put a child in the back of a pickup even with a restraint shows ignorance. For starters there is no roll over protection. Second there is no prevention of fumes, CO2, from entering the enclosed space.

Damn, what drama over a camper shell and kids riding in the back. Hell, I guess we are all lucky to be alive. He did mention finding a way to strap them in.
Nobody wants their kids hurt but somewhere the line has be drawn between being **** and having fun. I say keep the kids in the house at all times if you want to greatly reduce their chance of being in a traffic related accident.
It's a small wonder my daughter made it to her 18th birthday today. As an infant she rode in my wife's Grand National with the car seat in the front passenger seat facing forward. I guess we were frickin' idiots but that's the way it was done back then.
My daughter has been driving a convertible GT for the past year. Man, I really need my a$$ kicked.

I really don’t think it is that much more dangerous for a kid to ride in the back of the truck if they have a seat with a seat belt to hold them in. Usually they will be up towards the cab and if the cab doesn’t provide protection during a roll over for someone properly strapped in the back of the truck it sure won’t provide any protection for the kid had he been inside the cab. So that point is not valid since in a roll over the chances are high most people in the vehicle could be injured…
What people usually talk about when they are talking about being dangerous for people in the back of the truck is when they are NOT strapped in and thus could be THROWN out of the bed, like in the good ol’ days when I was a kid sitting in the back against the tailgate going down the freeway at 65 – 75mph…
If people REALLY wanted to be safe and properly protect their children we would all be driving around in completely caged cars like in Nascar, with 5-point seat-belts, helmets, fire retardant clothing. I don’t know about others but I am NOT going to completely cage my truck and my daughter will be just fine as will I, but for the guy, lady or child in that itty bitty little Honda car, well guess they were stupid for buying such a small death box and did NOT love their children as much…

Remember them little Subaru "Brat"Truck, El camino things.
They had them two seats bolted in the back with the handgrips and seat belts.
I think it had something to do with import tax so they wouldn't be classified as trucks.
Anyway, as far as kids in the back that would be the safest deal if they are the right size. A sliding window and or a drivers side opening window would help with fumes.
Man, you can sure feel that it is a full moon around here.
