does size matter?
does size matter?
i know its the age old question. however i would like to hear it straight from the horses mouth. the question refers to headers long or short. i just got a magnum blower from jdm along with the new sct tuner. installed on the tuner is two programs. 1st program is for the street and 91 octane. the 2nd program is for 100 octane. i was instructed by the guys at jdm not to run the second program unless i put on some headers and bigger injectors. there is some other part changes also, that i will not disclose.
i just installed the magnaflow system but left the stock manifolds. jdm says the shorty's should be fine.
if anybody out there has the shortys lets hear about it. or if anybody out there knows somebody with the shortys ring in.
and p/s tim skelton i already did a search

The problem with running long tubes is the issues come smog inspection time. Sure, everyone's gonna say use long tubes... and if I had my way, I would. However, I personally don't want to bother with pulling them off every 2 years. So, certainly there has to be a shorty header solution that should work better. I can handle the fact that instead of 25 hp (or whatever number) that I get 15. There isn't another header maker right now making CARB legal headers except JBA. Also, regarding poor quality. The stockers are built solid, but don't look like they'd flow even 1/4 of the exhaust that a JBA header would. In the late-model Mustang world, many have also said to not waste time with a shorty header. However, I have dynoed my mustang back to back with a shorty header and gained 15 rwhp with no other mods being done to it. Granted, the Lightning has a different engine... though I'm not yet convinced that the headers are crap.
Tim (not flaming here)- you normally have some pic or something to back up your convictions... I've seen JBA's dyno on their webpage showing a positive gain (could be only marketing hype I agree)... so do you have proof to say that they are crap?

I don't know about the lightnings, but with the LS1 cars, and a lot of others short tube headers are a waste of time, effort and most importantly money. The only good thing about them is the work well in really confined spaces.

airtroop01...Whay would you have to change your headers out for emisions test ? If you have cats on the truck it should be fine and you can get a program to limp to inspection, pass,go home put your reg. tune back in and you good to go.
