You have 2 problems: 1) no drain plug on your torque converter, and 2) special fitting on trans cooler line. You will need a special tool to remove that fitting if yours is an 04. And that tool is hard to come by (everyone needs it, from dealers to Jiffy Lubes). I know it was on several weeks backorder a few months back, but maybe supply has finally caught up with demand by now.

What about taking a line off the front mounter cooler, instead of the tranny? Same special tool needed?

That is where I thought you wanted to disconnect the line. My 01 has no special fitting there...

That is exactly where the special fitting is (pic of it is available in the thread link I provided). Started with 03 model year (for all F150's and Expy's and Econolines, etc. I think).

Okay guys. Between JeffsLightning and BMWBig6 I am getting conflicting information. One says no special fitting, the other says yes. I guess I'll know after I roll around under there. I am hoping that the tranny cooler olny uses regular flare end nuts holding the lines in. This special tool can be ordered at my local Ford dealership?

I've had a 2001 L, and I know what Jeffslightning is talking about - there used to be a convenient and easily accessible flush point where the line comes into the trans cooler. I was also one of the first to discover the new fitting on the 03's that require a special tool. Your dealer should have the required tool by now (when I tried 6 months ago, nobody could get their hands on them).

Without the drain plug on the converter and pan, and a special fitting on the line going into the cooler, Ford has really made it a PITA to flush the transmission. I haven't verified this myself, but I believe the line going into the trans itself has the same special fitting (or at least this is what the dealer told me). Maybe Ford forgot about that one and we lucked out. Please post if you discover that location is available for flushing (though it's no where near as convenient as the one at the front cooler).

Blown347Hatch it looks like Ford changed the fittings on Lightning's built after my 01...
Like BMWBig6 has said it looks like an 03 and later thing. Maybe Gregg (factory tech) can chime in on this... Good luck

Thanks guys. I'll start calling dealers next week on the (ridiculous) little tool they have made necessary.
