Question Getting all the old tranny fluid out....

I know about the places that have pumps, etc.
I have done this on the race car by filling the tranny up with the new fluid, and disconnecting the a line from the tranny cooler and letting the tranny pump it into a gallon jug. Since it's a 9 inch converter, I would usually stop at a gallon. Probably, the Lightning converter is huge, so I'm betting more like 8 quarts.
On Lightnings, is it difficult to get at the lines on the cooler to disconnect (one) of them? Any special tools required for this?

Depending on the year of your lightning, if you open the inspection cover in bottom of bellhousing there might be a converter drain plug. there was one in my 01. Its an 1/8" pipe plug just remove it and the converter will drain. Hope this helps. Artie

Mine's an 04. Some others have posted the 03's & 04's don't have a drain plug?

Do a search on www.fordtrucks.com. for this topic. There is a tech article there that completely describes what you need and how to do it. The entire flush took me a couple hours to do.

Thanks. Can you narrow it down some. There are dozens, if not hundreds of pages.

They stopped putting torque convertor drain plugs in the middle of 01...It's best to go to one of those oil places that has a machine that will changed out all your fluid.. Should be around 75 buck for a changeout...

Back to the original question.....

I wanted to see if anybody could tell me;

1. Can the tranny cooler lines be easily removed from the cooler?
2. Are there any special tools required to do so?

I don't want to take it to some tranny shop monkeys to put their greasy little hands all over everything.

That's a good idea. If I can access the external tranny cooler, then I can flush out more of the old fluid?

You won't need any special tools to disconect the cooler lines either...

Thumbs up Thank you sir!

Anybody have any idea how much the Lightning torque converters hold? I assume these are large converters? I'm thinking that I'm going to have to pump out approx 6 quarts?

Go to "tech articles" and then scroll down to the transmission/axle section. You'll see the article in there.

You have 2 problems: 1) no drain plug on your torque converter, and 2) special fitting on trans cooler line. You will need a special tool to remove that fitting if yours is an 04. And that tool is hard to come by (everyone needs it, from dealers to Jiffy Lubes). I know it was on several weeks backorder a few months back, but maybe supply has finally caught up with demand by now.
